Adele the Grebe from Torrey Canyon released back to the wild GuernseyOn The 21st February a Great Crested Grebe was rescued from the Torrey Canyon after being found covered in oil.

She was placed in an intensive care unit, named Adele and required regular bathes to remove the crude oil from her feathers by trained staff.  After much care, a lot of TLC and a bit of luck Adele was fit enough to place out on one of our pools where her feathers regained their natural oils.

Over a month later and a lot of hard work Yvonne Chauvel the Senior Animal Care Assistant and Geoff George Animal Collection Officer took Adele down to Grande Havre with her fighting fit today.

Yvonne said ‘What a gorgeous day, we couldn’t ask for better weather for a release.’  ‘Nursing oiled birds back to health is really difficult as you never know how much oil they have ingested trying to clean themselves.’ ‘We are so pleased with how Adele has done as Grebes are rare winter visitors here in Guernsey.’  ‘It’s what makes the job worth while when we get sites such as this when we release a bird back to where they belong.’Adele the Grebe from Torrey Canyon released back to the wild Guernsey

Geoff said ‘I love days like this but we couldn’t carry out our work without the support of the caring public.’  ‘We have our Easter Fayre this Saturday and we’re hoping for lots of visitors to raise funds to help birds like Adele and we still need more bric-a-brac, raffle and tombola prizes if anyone can help.’  ‘We also need a couple of dehumidifiers for our hedgehog unit and long white shredded paper for their bedding if anyone can help.’  ‘In fact we have that many hedgehogs we are having to build more cages and if anyone would like to donate towards these please do get in touch.’
