On the 4th November a young gannet was rescued on Pembroke Beach weak and unable to fly.

The bird has been in the care of the GSPCA for just over 3 weeks and has gained in strength and was recently rung ready for release.

The bird which has been named Asterix started in our intensive care room for large seabirds and was them moved onto our rehabilitation pools where it has improved day by day and is now ready for the wild.

The GSPCA team are now looking at the weather for when a break is available to release Asterix back to the wild.

Yvonne Chauvel Senior GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said "Asterix was very weak when she first arrived and it has been wonderful to see her improve."

"She has been rung by Chris Mourant ready for her to be released but we need a few nice days to give her the best chance."

"With all this awful weather we have had many injured seabirds and if you find any please do give us a call on 01481 257261."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "Asterix the young gannet is doing very well and after being found very weak at Pembroke Beach over 3 weeks ago she will soon be back in the wild."

"Asterix is one of the lucky ones as this awful weather will have affected countless wild animals and birds."

"We have wildlife advice pages on our website or you can always call 257261 if ever you find any in need."

"To help care for the 350+ animals and birds at the GSPCA costs over £1600 a day and if you would like to donate to those in our care every penny makes a real difference."

"There are many ways to donate and support the animals in our care from becoming a sponsor to donating online, calling 257261 to popping into the Shelter in St Andrews."
