Just over two months ago GSPCA Welfare Manager Lorna Prince was called to Les Eturs Veterinary practice to assess a dog that had been rushed into their care. Betty, a beautiful English Bull Terrier, had arrived at the surgery suffering with brain seizures, she couldn’t stand up, hold her head up and was blind. Betty was extremely malnourished and weighed less than a third of the weight a healthy English Bull at 13 kgs.

She was in a terrible state and at first the staff didn’t think she would make it through the night. It was a very upsetting sight to see a dog in such an horrendous condition especially as Betty had 5 weeks earlier become a mum to nine puppies.

Betty was cared for night and day, she was tube fed and sedated, but she remained in a coma and it was still unclear whether the kindest thing for her was to put her to sleep. The extent of the damage to this young dog and her future did not look good. Staff at the Vets, Lorna and the GSPCA staff have monitored and cared for Betty around the clock for the last 2 months and she has begun to make a good recovery.

Betty has regained her eye sight and she is slowly putting on weight. Her ribs are less visible and she doesn’t get as cold as she used to and while she has become quite famous for her knitwear we can finally take her outside without her jumper on. Betty has made a friend with a Shih Tzu and they enjoy walks on the beach together.

Lorna Prince GSPCA Welfare Manager said "Betty is a lovely dog and the GSPCA staff and those that are looking after her have become very fond of her."

"She will be under the watchful eye of her foster family and will continue to receive regular check-ups and assessments to keep an eye on her progress."

"Her body went through a massive trauma that nearly killed her but hopefully this young lady can once again lead a normal life."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "At the GSPCA we help and rescue thousands of animals every year, but the hardest part of the job is when we are called to animals in conditions like Betty."

"Every week the GSPCA Welfare Department staff Sarah Creasey and Manager Lorna Prince are called out to investigate alleged cases of cruelty and neglect."

"Betty is lucky to be alive after the condition she was in and it is great to see her to doing so well 2 months on."

"Between her veterinary costs and care Betty to get her to where she is today has cost well in excess of £3,000 and if you would like to help donate towards her or any ofGSPCA dog Betty on the beach in Guernsey the animals at the GSPCA we would really appreciate it."

"It is extremely important to ensure you feed your dog a balanced and complete diet and we are always happy to give advice from the GSPCA and we sell a range of food and treats as well as other pet goods."

"Why not become an Angel Pen Pal Sponsor which is a way you can donate monthly to help the hundreds of animals in our care and you receive a regular newsletter, updates, a car sticker, a plaque at the Shelter, certificate and also you will be helping dogs like Betty that really need our care."

"It is a huge year for us at the GSPCA as we rebuild much of the Shelter and every penny really does make a difference to house and care for the animals as well as carry out our welfare work."
