What a 2017 at the GSPCA with 2914 rescue and unwanted animals through the doors and many more helped such as farm animals and horses out on the roads, cruelty investigations undertaken, helping lost and found animals, education and community work, assisted with many types of emergencies and supporting those during bereavement of their pets.

During 2017 nearly half the animals through the doors at the Shelter in St Andrews were birds which totalled 1446 which included domestic, farm and wild birds.

Here are the top 6 groups of animals accepted in during 2017 –

  1. Birds – 1446
  2. Hedgehogs – 561
  3. Cats - 249
  4. Rabbits - 245
  5. Dogs – 218
  6. Guinea Pigs - 94

These numbers are made up of wide and varying reasons we help animals in many ways from wildlife to lost pets and show the huge work load the Shelter faces 24/7 365 days a year.

We often have many other animals in our care and through the doors from the boarding pets we care for which helps raise much needed funds to some of the animals gifted in through wills such as Hilda the 80 year tortoise who lives at the GSPCA.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “What a huge year we have had in 2017 with the busiest year we have ever seen with hedgehogs and a huge increase in guinea pigs.”

“We have also had a number of other trends seem to form such as much lower numbers of unwanted and stray cats and for the first time in our 145 history which we celebrate next month we didn’t have a single kitten or pregnant cat come in for rehoming during 2017 although we helped a number of strays find their way home.”

“We have seen a huge rise in the more exotic pets in comparison to previous years as well as an increase in numbers of unwanted pet birds but thankfully we have found many fantastic homes for most of them although some are still in need at the Shelter.”

“We continue to see a 100% return rate of all dogs and large farm animals found as strays although the stray rabbits, ferrets and other rodents found are rarely reunited.”

“We have seen many honours and been humbled from the Ceva Animal welfare Special Recognition Award to Geoff George becoming the Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey Emergency Hero.”

“The amount of support and help from the community and businesses continues to astound us and we are so grateful to every single person that helps in so many ways.”

“The grounds once again have seen many developments from the Poison Garden to the Charity Shop now being manned and open 7 days a week.”

“Our volunteer team continues to grow with over 800 now registered and in excess of 200 new volunteers and helpers trained in 2017.”

“The staff and team of volunteers continue to go over and above what is expected and with over 500 animals in our care the challenges we face 24/7 mean we all strive to do our very best for the community and animals of Guernsey.”

“Once again the number of events we have held, organised, attended, training sessions, corporate days, voluntourism sessions, educational talks, tours and birthday tours has grown to over 400 during 2017 and already many are planned for 2018 with our Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday being held in May for the 7th year running.”

“At the GSPCA we have been reviewing our plans for the future and the challenges ahead as we have been updating and reviewing our strategy.”

“When we were founded on the 14th February 1873 nearly 145 years ago the animal and community issues were very different to those we now face and will face in the coming years and we continue to do the very best we can for those we support and help.”

“We are always looking at ways to improve and do our very best and really appreciate support from any that wish to help our work at the GSPCA.”

“Thank you to all that have helped the GSPCA in 2017, happy New Year from us all and we look forward to the challenges that 2018 has ahead of us.”
