In the last week the GSPCA have had a number of calls of dogs worrying livestock and not under control in public places.

During Spring many farm and wild animals are preparing to give birth or nest and dogs not kept under control can really put these animals and their young at risk.

Over the last few days the GSPCA have been out daily to sheep that have escaped from fields and some have been as a direct result to dogs being out with no owner in sight chasing the animals from their enclosures.

Not only is this a concern for the GSPCA due to the risks for the animals involved, it is also against the law for a dog to be let out and not under control or supervision.

Terry Buckley GSPCA Receptionist said "We have had a number of calls over the last few days of dogs worrying sheep."

"There has been a number of calls of a collie type dog around the Pleinmount area chasing sheep although we haven't been able to see, catch it or find an owner to talk to."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "It is a real worry at this time of year for dogs to be chasing sheep and scaring wildlife and other farm animals as many may be pregnant, nesting or even have young."

"At the GSPCA we help around 200 stray dogs every year but thankfully most don't chase or try to kill other animals but we have had a number of worrying reports in the last few days."

"If you see a lose dog worrying livestock please do give us a call at the GSPCA on 257261."

"For the owners of the animals being affected by dogs causing issues you may want to take legal advice if anything happens or if you are concerned and we do have a web page with links to Guernsey animal law."

"There are approximately 10,000 dog owners in Guernsey and although most are responsible, caring owners it only takes one dog to cause suffering and problems to other animals if not kept under control."

"The law is very clear regarding owners controlling and caring for their dogs in Guernsey and if at the GSPCA we hear of any issues or reports we will pass them onto the police and States Vet where necessary."

"At the GSPCA we are appealing for all dog owners to please take great care to ensure that their dogs here in Guernsey aren't putting other animals at risk."
