The last few weeks have been very busy at the GSPCA with dozens of injured hedgehogs, baby birds, rabbits, but also an unusual high number of Birds of Prey.

On the 21st July Volunteer Warden Andrew Green was called out to an injured young kestrel in Kingsmill which is doing well, named 'Allardyce' and will soon be back in the wild.

On the 28th July Animal Collection Officer Geoff George was called out to the Strawberry Farm to a young kestrel with a bleeding wing which is now named 'Pokemon' and is near ready for release.

On the 3rd August Animal Collection Officer Geoff Georgewas called out to Petit Bot to rescue a kestrel that is now called 'Kizzy' and is now very well and near to release.

On the 5th August Animal Collection Officer Geoff George was called out to another young injured kestrel at the Airport which is now called 'Billy the Kid' and is also soon to be released.

Finally on the 4th August a Short Eared Owl was found in Sark with an injured Ear.  The bird was rescued by a kind member of public and the young bird has been named 'Taffy' and is currently in our wildlife room being cared for by the GSPCA team until it is healthy enough to be released.

The 4 kestrels have all spent time in intensive care units and are currently in the rehabilitation aviaries and planned to be released soon in or near to the areas they were rescued.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "We often help birds of prey but we have never had so many in at the same time at the GSPCA."

"The 4 kestrels are all doing well and soon to be released back to the wild near to where they were rescued."

"We have a Short Eared Owl that was rescued in Sark which is absolutely stunning and doing very well."

"We have helped a few Barn owls in the last few months and other birds of prey, but it is rare for us to have a Short Eared Owl at the GSPCA."

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "We normally have 1 or 2 birds of prey that come in each month or so but we currently have 5 all of which are doing very well."

"The 4 kestrels are now out in our rehabilitation aviaries so we can monitor them and ensure they are ready for release which we hope to do very soon."

"The Short Eared Owl is currently in our wildlife building and when ready will go out to one of the rehabilitation aviaries before being released."
