Every day animals in need find their way to the GSPCA or we are called out to rescue them.

Earlier this month we had to free a hedgehog from a rat trap.

'Nugget' as the GSPCA named the adult male hedgehog was rescued from the St Sampson's area.

Sadly the team at the GSPCA couldn't free the hedgehog from the trap so a quick call was made to the local fire station and the hedgehog was transported so that their team could help release Nugget from the wire cage.

As we were unsure if Nugget had any internal injuries Nugget was checked over by the vet and he spent 4 days at the GSPCA so we could monitor him.

Thankfully he was very well despite his ordeal and was released near to where he was found.

Sarah Ozanne Animal Care Assistant said "We are called on to help and rescue hedgehogs and other animals that are caught in all sorts of man made traps, nets, douits and other hazards every week."

"Nugget was very lucky as if he hadn't of been seen he could of starved to death in the rat trap."

"We'd like to thank the firemen that helped to free Nugget the hedgehog from the rat trap and also let them know that we have bought our very own ring cutter so if this happens again we have the equipment on site at the GSPCA to quickly free animals that may be caught in similar wire enclosures."

"Did you know you or your business can sponsor our hedgehogs and become an Angel Pen Pal sponsor and be part of their care and welfare and you can find out more by calling us on 257261, popping into the Shelter for a leaflet or on our website."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "It is a busy time for us with hedgehogs as we rescue and care for those that are being injured from traps to garden machinery."

"It is so important that we don't put our wildlife at risk as far too many come through our doors with injuries that could have been prevented."

"If the kind member of public hadn't have found Nugget in the rat trap it is very likely he would have starved to death."

"We help on average between 300 and 400 hedgehogs a year and all are microchipped like Nugget before they are released so we know who they are if they find their way back to the GSPCA."

"Thank you to the fire service for helping us free Nugget who is now back in the wild where he belongs."
