Last week around 30 children from St Martins Primary School enjoyed an Epic Week in the sun at the GSPCA.

The week was arranged thanks to Clare Giles the Assistant Head of St Martin’s Primary School who met with GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne some weeks ago to see how the children could help out at the GSPCA, have fun and learn about the work of the Animal Shelter.

When the children were asked what Epic Week activity they wanted to do hundreds had wanted to come along to the GSPCA but as spaces were limited 30 lucky children were selected and had their first afternoon at the Shelter last Monday.

The first day involved a full behind the scenes tour and the children got to see animals from baby birds to Sami the seal pup behind one way glass, a baby hedgehog to the tortoise racing, well the tortoise were walking along the grass in front of the children and we called it racing which they really enjoyed.

The second day the children had the opportunity to experience enriching the environment for the animals so the first part involved reading to over 25 cats as well as some of the other animals in the care of the GSPCA.

The second part of day two involved foraging for wild plants and seeding grasses and using toilet rolls to make treat toys for the guinea pigs, rabbits and birds at the Animal Shelter which the children got to see being fed and popped into the animals pens.

Day 3 focused on the conservation work of the GSPCA and the children foraged for items like pine cones and then used them to make a bug hotel which they all signed their names on and popped a few insects they found inside.

The final day at the GSPCA the children brought cakes which they had made for a Cake Sale outside the newly refurbished GSPCA Charity Shop which raised an amazing £170 and many of the children's parents came along to support and see the new shop area.

On Friday GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne was invited along to the celebration of the end of Epic Week at St Martins Primary School and the children presented Steve with a lovely card full of pictures and kind comments as well as a gift.

Steve had brought the children certificates and a newsletter as a way of thanks and all the children said how much they enjoyed their week.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "What an epic week we had with St Martins Primary School Students last week."

"They helped in so many ways and learnt so many things and were all so well behaved, their parents and school can be very proud."

"With a differnt focus each day from a full tour, to environmental enrichment, conservation to helping raise the funds to help the 24/7 work we carry out at the GSPCA the St Martins children were truly epic."

"The bug hotel they made was amazing and it was wonderful seeing them read to the cats, we are so grateful for the funds raised from the cake sale and it was so nice to be invited to their final day celebration at the school.

"A huge thanks to Mrs Giles and all that helped make Epic Week so much fun at the GSPCA."

Here are some of the comments in the card presented to Steve -

"Dear Steve, I loved reading to the cats. My favourite was Cookie. I also liked seeing the kittens. Jemma."

"Dear Steve, Thank you for letting us come to the GSPCA. I loved reading to the cats (the snake scared me a bit though). My favourite animal was Sammy. Clara"

Finally from one special lad "Dear Dad, Thank you for having me. I loved having the cake sale and reading to the cats but my favourite was making the food for the pigeons and guinea pigs that was the best. From Joseph."
