Today is World Stray Day and at the GSPCA we help strays all year round here in Guernsey.

Just this weekend we've helped dogs to ferrets and there are many pets and farm animals that escape and need the help of the Animal Shelter.

With around 200 stray dogs and over 1000 strays helped every year by the GSPCA we face challenges on a daily basis reuniting them with their owners.

This month England, Scotland and Wales will be bringing in compulsory microchipping for dogs.

This is not something that is required here in Guernsey at this time and if all dogs were chipped this would help us quickly reunite lost dogs with their owners.

Sadly only 50% of the dogs and cats that come in as strays are microchipped and an even lower number with a collar and tag.

There are currently around 20,000 dogs and cats in Guernsey so we estimate 10,000 in total aren't microchipped.

Despite a survey that has been run by the GSPCA showing an overwhelming number of individuals think that all dogs and cats should be microchipped in Guernsey, every week we help cats and dogs that we struggle to find an owner.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "From stray cows to lost dogs we help over a 1000 strays in Guernsey every year."

"We help more stray cats than any of the pet of farm species with over 500 a year coming through our doors."

"The hardest challenge we face is the fact that only 1 in 2 dogs and cats are microchipped and even less have a collar and tag which means we often find it difficult to find an owner."

"Thankfully we do find the owner of every stray dog and stray farm animal eventually, but there are many stray cats, birds, rabbits and ferrets that an owner is never found."

"In the summer months we often help over 20 stray tortoise and although many are reclaimed we do have a few which are now residents at the GSPCA."

"For only £4.99 we can microchip your dog or cat at the GSPCA and if you would like to have it done please give us a call on 257261 so we can arrange it."

"Today a stray tortoise was brought in from Rue De Magloire Lane, a stray black and white female cat from St Andrews on Saturday and last week a stray canary and a stray ferret all of which we are looking for the owners."

"In Guernsey under the new Animal Welfare Ordinance 2012 when a stray arrives at the GSPCA we care for it for 21 days and if no owner is found we then look to find them a new home."
