Today after 9 weeks of searching we are delighted to report that we have caught Jessie the stray beagle at our giant man made dog trap.

Just after 5.30am a dog walker passing by the GSPCA man made dog trap that was designed by Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager, equipped by Project and Access Scaffolding, placed and erected by the GSPCA team and finished off by a team from States Works saw Jessie enter through the only entrance.

He closed the only entrance and called our emergency line and spoke to the on call wardens who asked him to remain at the trap until they arrived very soon after.

With no escape in the 130 metre perimetre fenced area where the GSPCA have been feeding Jessie for the last 3 weeks, Mat Hill-Smith and Jen Bradshaw two GSPCA Volunteer Wardens attempted to coax Jessie and catch her on a lead. Within 10 minutes of Jessie looking to see if there was a way out Mat and Jen found Jessie deciding to sit and let them approach her.

She was a little unsure when the slip lead was placed on her and they then placed her in the actual dog trap to ensure when she was transported in the van she had no escape.

GSPCA staff Steve Byrne and Sarah Ozanne arrived just as Jessie was caught and helped carry her in the dog trap to the GSPCA Ambulance at Port Soif.

We arrived back at the GSPCA just after 6am and she was carried in the trap to a kennel where GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne and Wardens Mat and Jen let her out to find although very timid she approached and enjoyed a stroke, scratch and even snuggled into the team.

Although Jessie lost quite a bit of weight in the first month, since she has remained at Port Soif the amount of food she has been consuming has meant she has been gradually putting weight on which is clear from the photos and video clips from the GSPCA wildlife cameras over the time she has been out.

We have offered her some food first thing this morning, but even with offering by hand she wasn't interested at to start but has now enjoyed a bowl of tinned food and is currently relaxing in the sun.

We have spoken to the owners who are over joyed and very excited to be having her back and we are just waiting for the vet to arrive to check her over to make sure she is healthy after her ordeal.

The GSPCA Welfare team who run the dog training classes to APDT standards will be helping the owners who only owned her for 2 weeks beofre her escape to settle and work with her timid and nervous disposition.

The operation to catch her has taken the GSPCA team to every Parish in Guernsey and we have followed her for hundreds of miles back and forth around the island.

Thousands of staff and volunteer hours have been dedicated to catch her day and night and we have received hundreds of phone calls, thousands of emails and messages and the team have been soaked in the rain, wind swept, baked in the sun and exhausted trying to contain and follow her movements.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "Today is a very happy day for the GSPCA team as we caught Jessie the stray beagle first thing this morning thanks to our Volunteer Wardens Mat and Jen and a wonderful passer by."

"It has been a huge operation that started on a small scale 9 weeks ago and has escalated week on week as she managed to evade and take us through every Parish in Guernsey."

"She entered the trap area we had made thanks to our team, Project Hire, Access Scaffolding and States Works as the sun rose, and a kind dog walker passing by managed to trap her in and call us."

"It only took just over 5 minutes to catch Jessie who after trying to find a way out decided to sit down and allow our fantastic volunteer wardens to pop a lead on her and then pop her in the actual dog trap to transport her."

"Myself and another team member Sarah arrived as Mat and Jen caught her and we helped transport her to the GSPCA Ambulance where she was transported back to the GSPCA and is currently in a kennel."

"I spoke to the owners first thing who are overjoyed she is safe and they are looking forward getting her home later today."

"We are now awaiting the vet to pop in and give her a health check, although she appears very well despite her 9 weeks."

"After 9 weeks of searching, hundreds of calls, thousands of emails and messages, hundreds of miles walked, drenched team members, baked team members and thousands of man hours from all of the GSPCA team day and night, for this mornings break we had a little celebration as we've caught Jessie the beagle."

"Words cannot explain how hard the team have worked and the appreciation for all of the support we have received especially that of Project Hire and Sale Limited, Access Scaffolding and States Works, thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

"The search for Bertie the stray schnauzer continues who escaped last November and if anyone has any reports please do let us know as we have heard very little over the last few months."

"The work involved in catching Jessie has been immense and if anyone would like to donate to the work we do at the GSPCA 24/7 or become an Angel Pen Pal sponsor and help each month the thousands of animals that come through our doors it would be hugely appreciated."
