Over the last week across the Bailiwick the weather has been challenging our wonderful wildlife.

From Poppy the grey seal pup in Alderney to oiled guillemots found due to the wet windy weather the GSPCA is being kept very busy.

In the last week we have had two oiled guillemots both on the South West Coast.

Meep Meep and Robinson as they have been named are doing well after their bathes but as the bad weather continues the GSPCA are braced for likelihood of other animals affected by the weather needing our help.

Often during the winter months with the stormy weather oils that have settled on the seabed gets stirred up to the surface which then coats our seabirds and causes them a great deal of harm which can prevent them from flying, swimming, hunting and even poison them if they swallow when preening.

The GSPCA are asking those that live around and visit our coast to please watch out for these birds in need as well as seal pups which can get separated from their mothers at this time of year with the current bad weather.

We have a number of webpages with wildlife advice or you can call 01481 257261 for help 24/7

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "With the awful stormy weather we have had we have seen oiled seabirds and of course Poppy the grey seal pup needing rescuing."

"It is highly likely due to the weather their will be other wildlife in need and the GSPCA are asking those out and about to please keep a mindful eye."

"When the wind and waves are up oil that has settled on the seabed can be churned up and can cause seabirds and other animals harm."

"We have some great web pages with advice on what to do if you see a seal pup which are being born at this time of year or oiled birds, although we are only a call away on 257261."

"With young seal pups the main piece of advice is to please not approach them as you can scare their mother away and if you see one to please call us on 257261 to make sure they are safe and for advice."

Sarah Ozanne GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said "Both oiled guillemots have been bathed and are doing well at the Animal Shelter."

"Meep Meep and Robinson are two of the lucky birds as there are others probably out there with oil on struggling."

"If you see an oiled bird please do give us a call on 257261."

Geoff George GSPCA Animal Collection Officer and carer of Poppy the seal pup said "Poppy is the earliest seal pup we have rescued so it is likely that others are being born over the next few weeks and with the stormy weather we are asking those out along the coast to take care and not get too close if you see any."

"Please do give us a call if you see a seal pup on 257261 as we can check it is well from a safe distance."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager continues "For those out with dogs please don't let them approach seal pups as this can scare their mothers off and if they were to bite your dog and cause a nasty injury."

"We are appealing for donations to help Poppy the seal pup, the oiled birds and the many other animals in our care."
