On Monday 20th November 2023 the Lieutenant-Governor His Excellency the Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB, CBE came for his first visit to the GSPCA for a guided tour.

His Excellency arrived at 1030am and was greeted by GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne GSPCA President and local Vet John Knight and GSPCA Vice Presidents Tom Le Pelley and Adele Malpas.

From Barnacle Bill the loggerhead turtle to Faulkner and Jem the grey seal pups, hedgehogs to cockatiels, seeing the storm damage to the new small animal unit, plans for the future with the BIG BUILD to hearing about our 150 year history His Excellency was both fascinated and intrigued with the work that goes on 24/7 365 days a year.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It was wonderful to meet and show His Excellency around the GSPCA on Monday.”

“He arrived at 1030am and his one hour tour turned out to be nearly 2 hours as he was so interested in all that we do here at the GSPCA.”

“During the tour His Excellency got to met many of the animals in our care from Barnacle Bill the loggerhead turtle to our two seal pups from Jersey Faulkner and Jem.”

“We talked about our 150 year history and also showed His Excellency our plans for the future with our Big Build and the appeal https://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/biggest-appeal-ever-gspca-big-build-appeal-buy-brick-build-brighter-future-animals-guernsey .”

“We showed the awful storm damage and talked about those that have kindly donated to the repairs by calling us on  01481 257261, by post to GSPCA, Rue des Truchots, St Andrews, Guernsey GY6 8UD and the many online https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA) .”

“We mentioned many of the funny stories, cruelty cases and how emotional our work can be especially helping 1000’s of bereaved pet owners each year from the road traffic accidents to our cremation service.”

“We talked about our GSPCA 150th Year Ball on Saturday 10th February 2023 https://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/new-date-gspca-150th-ball-st-pierre-park-hotel-saturday-10th-february-2024-tickets-sale-and-cou and so much more.”

“After the tour with Steve where his Excellency met many of the GSPCA team as well as the animals he had tea and biscuits with the committee members and met up with Tim Pellett the GSPCA Training and Community Officer who talked about the Work 2 Benefit work and what we do with the amazing corporate support we have.”

Tim Pellett GSPCA Training and Community Officer said “We really enjoyed meeting His Excellency and talking to him about our work.”

“I got the chance to tell him all about our work with those unemployed and how we support them getting back into employment through the Work 2 Benefit scheme.”

“We also talked about the many other volunteer opportunities.”

His Excellency Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB, CBE recently wrote a fabulous letter of thanks to the GSPCA in which a few of the kind words he said were “Thank you very much indeed for the opportunity to visit the GSPCA.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to visit the site, meet some of your team and see some of the animals in your care.”

“I should say from the start how surprised I was at the scale of the operation.”

“It is hugely impressive the operation and your ability to balance the competing demands on your resources really stuck in my mind.”

“You seem to have managed the post storm challenges much better than I thought you had, although I don’t underestimate the juggling you have had to carry out.”

“Walking around the estate the need for the Big Build was obvious in a few areas.”

“Your team were very welcoming and I learnt something every time I turned a corner.”

“At the top of the list was seeing those beautiful seals out of the water.”

“It is quite a thing to visit a place where every life has value.”

“I look forward seeing your visions come to life in the coming years.”

Steve continued “A huge thank you to His Excellency for taking time out to visit us during his busy schedule and also for being our Patron at the GSPCA.”

“The Lieutenant-Governor General Froome when we were founded 150 years ago supported as our Patron and it is so wonderful in our 150th year to have Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB, CBE as our current Patron and to show him how far we have come and the plans for the future.”

“To see lots of ways to support us in our 150th year please visit https://www.gspca.org.gg/page/gspca-celebrating-150-years .”

Did you know the Lieutenant-Governor is appointed by The Monarch and is the Crown's personal representative in the Bailiwick. Appointed for a five year term, Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB, CBE took up the post in February 2022.
