Over the last few weeks the GSPCA have been receiving baby birds on a daily basis and the Animal Shelter would like to remind everyone what to do if you find a young bird.
As a general rule, it is best to leave baby birds alone.
A baby bird has a greater chance of survival in the wild than it has being hand-reared by man as they learn to fend for themselves and how to forage for food by their parents.
Around 2 weeks after hatching young birds in your Bailiwick garden usually leave the nest, just before they learn how to fly.
430am Saturday morning 3 staff and one volunteer were queuing outside the White Hart as the sun rose to start the 38.5mile Itex Walk around Guernsey.
The GSPCA team were made up of Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager, Geoff George Animal Collection Officer, Tony Gallie Animal Care Assistant and Natalie Randall Volunteer Warden.
At the GSPCA we are often called regarding abandoned animals.
Last week a concerned member of public spotted a trio of Grey Silkies wandering around the Vale Castle area.
The birds were quite nervous and wasn't able to catch them so called in the GSPCA to assist.
Geoff George the GSPCA Animal Collection Officer attended the seen a number of times last week before he finally managed to catch them.
Safe and sound now at the Shelter they are doing well and there is a home already lined up for them.
Already the GSPCA has rescued, rehabilitated and cared for over 100 hedgehogs this year.
Last night Charlie a very poorly hedgehog arrived covered in mange and extremely thin.
We often see mange in hedgehogs in Guernsey but if rescued and brought into the Shelter can easily be treated. Thankfully Charlie is one of the lucky ones and he is now in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hedgehog Block at the GSPCA where he will undergo a series of treatments to free him from this mite.
On Saturday 5th January GSPCA Shelter staff had a call to an injured seal pup at Pleinmont.
Animal Care Assistant Annabelle Janes and Senior Animal Care Assistant Yvonne Chauvel responded to find a thin, injured grey seal pup with laboured breathing.
At only 21kg the pup had to be carried to the van and transported to the Shelter as to have left him would have meant he wouldn't have survived.
Last week the GSPCA manned a stall at the West Show and got to talk to hundreds of visitors about the work at the Shelter.
Lots of money was raised to help the hundreds of animals at the Shelter and fun was had by the many youngsters and adults a like that played the games we took along. Also many got to meet Bernard and the other Giant Animal Mascots we took along to promote the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday Animal Mascot Race and Games on the 9th September.
Every year the GSPCA rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured wildlife from discarded rubbish and litter. This morning we had an adult Gannet brought in tangled in fishing line. Found by kind States workers in Petit Bot the bird would have certainly died if they hadn’t rescued it.
Currently being freed from its bonds this poor bird was tangled from head to toe. Gary as he’s been named once free will be checked over fed and we will ensure he is tip top before release and we are hopeful for a good recovery.
How cute is the now named baby chick Sandra? Literally only days old little Sandra was found yesterday in the South East of the island walking around with no mum in site.
Now in the GSPCA care we will look after and rear her until she is of an age to find a new home. Sandra has asked us to let everyone know that she would like to update you on her developments and how she grows.
