Yesterday a family had a surprise after purchasing a playhouse from a local shop in Guernsey.
When they opened the box they discover a very large beetle.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We see all sorts of things arrive at the GSPCA and we never know what will be next.”
“Yesterday afternoon we had a very large beetle brought into us which is thought to have travelled all the way from Pennsylvania in the US.”
“A family recently bought a playhouse from a shop in Guernsey and when they opened the box which was from the State in the US originally they discovered what we believe is a Meloe Angusticollis or more commonly known as a short-winged blister beetle.”
“We believe it is male as he keeps leaving oily spots which the males do to deter predators.”
“We have informed the States Vets to see what we can do for the beetle which has been named Angus.”
“In the last year we have had snakes to lizards arrive illegally, well by accident in travellers cases here in Guernsey which have been able to be rehomed but we’ve never had this type of beetle before.”
“Angus is in quarantine at the GSPCA with a selection of greens which they would eat in the wild.”
