Next week many beaches closed to dog walkers reopen for the winter season to our canine friends but the GSPCA want to highlight some concerns owners need to be aware of.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Next week many beaches reopen to allow dogs to be walked on them for the winter months.”
“This is very exciting for many but we have had reports of palm oil on our coast which can be very toxic to our beloved pets.”
The GSPCA is warning dog owners of the possible presence of a waxy substance along our coast line which could well be Palm Oil.
We have been informed of a sighting at Pembroke earlier today.
The public is advised not to remove the palm oil but anyone who has picked any up should double wrap it in plastic and dispose of it with their normal refuse.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have had a report of a white oily substance being seen at Pembroke and we are asking all dog owners to be vigilant.”
We are very lucky that most of Guernsey's beaches are dog friendly during the summer months. From the 1st October the beaches where dogs are banned between 1st May and 30th September have the restrictions lifted and these are –
Fermain

Vazon (Northern end)

We have been blessed with incredible weather during April and with the Coronavirus social distancing restrictions and many off work, Guernsey beaches have never seen so many dogs on them each day.

Dog owners are being reminded that from the 1st May to the 30th September inclusive, restrictions return on seven Guernsey beaches: Fermain, Petit Bot, L’Erée, Vazon, Cobo, Port Soif, L’Ancresse/Pembroke. Herm’s Shell Beach, Belvoir Bay, Fisherman’s Beach, and the area of beach in front of the White House Hotel to the Herm Harbour Jetty are also out of bounds to dogs.
The Environment Department is advising dog owners to keep pets away from any white substance they may find on local beaches.
Small lumps of a white waxy substance have been found today at Grandes Rocques Bay by a member of the public. Lumps of a similar substance found in south Devon and Cornwall in December 2014 were identified as degraded edible oil or fat. If the substance is degraded oil, whilst not harmful to human health, it could pose a danger to dogs if it has gone rancid.
