Last week the GSPCA team took part in training in Pet Bereavement thanks to the Guernsey Bereavement Service.
Sadly every day of the year staff and volunteers at the GSPCA help owners of pets that have died, whether recently or in the past and it is always hard to know if you are saying the right thing.
Many visitors over recent years will know the friendly and familiar face of Major the cockerel.
Major turned up at the GSPCA with an elderly hen a few years ago. It was unclear if they were strays, just escaped from a near by farm or home or if they had been dumped at the GSPCA.
Sadly Majors wife was very elderly and wasn’t with us long, but for the last few years Major has strutted his stuff around the GSPCA and made many friends.
Many visitors would find him following them around and he loved many of the staff and volunteers that fed and cared for him.
Last week at the GSPCA we have three of the volunteers from the Guernsey Bereavement Service a guided tour of the GSPCA as a special thanks.
Last month the Guernsey Bereavement Service once again helped provide training to staff and volunteers at the GSPCA as we often have t hel those through the death of their pet.
Just last night GSPCA Wardens and the Manager helped a young cat that had been killed by a road traffic incident and the break the sad news to the owner who was extremely upset.

This Friday after many months of work, countless volunteers, supporters and businesses, amazing donations and support the GSPCA will officially open the new Chapel of Rest and revamped Memorial Garden.
Every year the GSPCA helps over 1000 pet owners through the loss and death of their beloved pets and thanks to so many there is now a lovely area to help pet owners through this difficult time at the GSPCA.
On Tuesday 12th June Northern Trust staff came for their second volunteer day of 2018.
Over the previous four years 120 volunteers from Northern Trust have helped out at the GSPCA, with 38 staff helping in 2014 and a further 26 helping in 2015, 34 in 2016 and 16 in 2017, 6 earlier this year and additional 5 this week taking the total to 125.

Last night was our second public Pet bereavement Training session. Having held a similar event earlier this year, and in house training in 2013 we would like to thank all involved and that came along.
The GSPCA along with the Guernsey Bereavement Service worked together to hold both evenings to help those in the animal industry, volunteers and anyone interested.
