Last night was our second public Pet bereavement Training session. Having held a similar event earlier this year, and in house training in 2013 we would like to thank all involved and that came along.
The GSPCA along with the Guernsey Bereavement Service worked together to hold both evenings to help those in the animal industry, volunteers and anyone interested.
Sadly every day of the year staff and volunteers not only at the GSPCA, but vets, pet shops, dog trainers, and many others talk to owners of pets that have died, whether recently or in the past and it is always hard to know if you are saying the right thing.
The session was aimed at helping those talking to owners through Pet Bereavement and about the support out there for them.
Zoe Le Pelley and Linda Norman from the Guernsey Bereavement Service, along with Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager made an interactive presentation and explained where help can be found, what can be said or done and the services at the GSPCA.
The GSPCA offer a Pet Cremation Service at the Animal Shelter and we are also developing a Pet Memorial Garden, which is being sponsored by the Sure Community Foundation.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "From vets to pet sitters, we had a huge variety of pet professionals and volunteers in attendance between both evenings and everyone really took a lot from the Pet Bereavement training session."
"The feedback was so positive we are looking at holding another session in November and we are also going to ask teachers and schools if they feel training would be beneficial to help them with children dealing with grief from the loss of a pet."
