The GSPCA recently met with the team from Guernsey Employment Trust whose aim is to assist disabled people to secure and maintain work in Guernsey.

The Guernsey Employment Trust has produced the following charter which provides employers in Guernsey with practical information, good practice and guidance.

The Charter enables employers to provide tangible evidence that they are working towards taking positive action and developing initiatives that will enable more disabled people to access employment opportunities in Guernsey.

The development of a Charter is also intended to help disabled job applicants identify employers that have made positive commitments regarding the treatment of disabled people within recruitment, training and retention processes, and have sought to raise disability awareness within their organisations.

The GSPCA are proud to have signed up for the charter and we have undertaken to adhere to the following commitments:

  • We will encourage job applications from disabled people
  • We will guarantee a job interview for disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for our job vacancies
  • We will implement good practice in all aspects of the recruitment and retention of disabled people
  • We will consider ‘reasonable adjustments’ in the recruitment process and in the workplace
  • We will provide work experience placements and job tasters for disabled people where practicable
  • Staff may be available to conduct mock or practice interviews for job seekers with a disability
  • We will encourage managers and supervisors to undertake on-line Disability Awareness training
  • We will act as a disability Ambassador and encourage staff to motivate other employers
  • We will develop our own commitment to enhance the employment opportunities for disabled islanders.

With a team of 25 staff and over 800 volunteers the GSPCA have team members from all walks of life and we always strive to provide an environment of care and respect for all animals and humans.

The GSPCA has been working hard to improve the facilities at the GSPCA for accessibility which has been helped with grants from the Christmas Lottery, as well as other donations to provide ramped access to removing thresholds from doors.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It was wonderful to meet the team from Guernsey Employment Trust and to find out about their Employers’ Disability Charter.”

“The Guernsey Employment Trust Employers’ Disability Charter is something the GSPCA is very proud to support as we not only help 1000’s of animals every year, but we are continually striving to ensure we have a work and volunteer environment where all members of the community have access and can engage with our aims of helping animals and supporting our local community.”

“We are currently advertising for Casual staff at the GSPCA as we are exceptionally busy and have the new updated application packs to include our commitment which is on our website page http://www.gspca.org.gg/about/vacancies .”

“We also have a number of other projects we are trying to achieve to improve the Shelter such as improving and updating our Disabled Toilet and also rebuilds to our older sections to improve access and if anyone would like to support any of these projects we would love to hear from them.”

“Another project we are looking to achieve is to find a volunteer or funding towards having a GSPCA team member who can help assist volunteers with disabilities or challenges so they can not only help at the GSPCA but can also develop during their volunteering at the Shelter and we are appealing for anyone interested in supporting or getting involved to please get in touch.”

“If you can help with any of these projects please do contact me on 257261 or email [email protected] .”
