On Sunday the GSPCA took over St Peter Port Seafront for the the fifth year in a row.
Normally the GSPCA Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday takes place in September but this year we held the fun family and pet event in May.
Thousands filled the Seafront which was alive with a family buzz as all ages enjoyed the stalls and entertainment.
From the Fire Rescue to Island Mums with chalk drawing for the children, food stalls to candy floss, charity to craft stalls, Isle of Sark Shipping to Active Dog the range stretched across the community bringing locals and tourists to the front for what turned out to be a wonderful sunny day.
The GSPCA took over much of the Crown Pier with animals from the Shelter, games, tombolas, a coconut shy, information boards of the work we carry out, a 'Show Us Your Pets' board and a range of pet and GSPCA goods all of which were extremely popular.
The day was kicked off by a range of musicians which entertained the crowds through the day including Chris Taylor, Carly Tucknott, Blue Mountains, Fourtissimo, John and Emma Lancaster, Roger Mancini, Collete Da Cunha Esteves, Charlie Cosnet and Elizabeth Beacon kindly organised a 7 piece band and we must say thank you for giving the front a wonderful vibe, it was much appreciated.
The GSPCA fun dog show saw not only many dogs rehomed by the GSPCA including some of the Slovakian puppies but also puppies to wonderful golden oldies which were all beautiful and loved pets. Winners, thanks and details of the fun dog show are being posted later today.
Island Mums ran the children's fancy dress and the chalk drawing which was hugely popular with young and old.
The Giant Animal Mascot Race this year transformed into a 5-a-side game of football and whilst the Muratti had taken place in Jersey, on the Crown Pier in Guernsey a team of giant animals from the Friquet Garden Centre took on Daniel the Donkey from Island FM and the GSPCA team who had Bernard the GSPCA Dog, Dave the Minion, Olaf from Frozen and a giant Beaver as players.
With Lorna Prince Welfare Manager refereeing what made for a hugely entertaining spectacle the two team literally battled it out in two halves which led to a 2 all draw. A penalty shoot out had to be taken and although the GSPCA team with Daniel the Donkey technically won 3-2 both teams did an excellent job with their very limited vision and very warm suits. We are already thinking that for next year we would like to recruit even more teams and have a much longer tournament so if you are interested please do get in touch.
Just after 3.30pm the Bonnie the seal release competition was drawn and the winner was 'Phillip Northcott' who will be invited along once Bonnie is full fattened.
The money raised from the GSPCA Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday helps the hundreds of animals at the GSPCA and thousands that come through the doors every year.
From Bonnie the seal pup to Olivia the loggerhead turtle every penny helps make a huge difference.
The Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday has to date raised in excess of £4000 and donations and funds continue to come in from the amazing event that so many enjoyed.
From all at the GSPCA we would like to thank every single person that was involved, supported, helped, entertained and took part in our biggest event of the year.
A special thank you must go to all the drivers and companies that lent the fleet that consisted of 14 vehicles that helped move all of the stock and equipment back and forth from the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.
Also thank you to all those that donated teddies for the coconut shy which raised on its own over £650.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "From fantastic weather to a Seafront filled with wonderful people Sunday was an amazing day which we are hugely grateful to everyone involved."
"This was the fifth Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday and with some marked changes from the date to the Mascot 5-a-side it all made for probably the best Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday with the whole day dedicated to celebrating animals in Guernsey."
"With over £4000 raised so far, the amazing hard work put in by everyone meant that families, pets and those off the Aurora Cruise Liner had plenty to see and do."
"I personally can't thank everyone involved individually as the list is far stretching."
"From the support in the States for allowing us to put on the event to the helpful businesses along the seafront, the stall holders to GSPCA staff and volunteers, visitors to supported, musicians to giant animal mascots, dogs to children, groups to charities, thousands helped make the fifth Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday a huge success."
"We have had wonderful feedback about the day on our social media and directly which is really appreciated."
"Also well done to 'Paul Northcott' who won the Bonnie the seal pup fattening appeal competition."
"Paul will be contacted to be invited along when Bonnie is ready to be released back to the wild."
"The day itself isn't yet over for us at the GSPCA as donations from the day continue to come in and we are still unpacking and putting everything away."
"We are already thinking of next years event and if anyone would like to be involved or have any ideas please do get in touch."
"We are already into our next event which is the GSPCA Cupcake Week and a way to help animals by making, baking and selling cake in your work place or school."
Again thank you to one and all involved and helped with the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday it is really appreciated.
