BIG FISH APPEAL - Please help support the many sick and injured seabirds and seals at the GSPCA

At the GSPCA we have had the busiest start to a year with seals and seabirds than the team can remember.

Currently we have 14 guillemots, 1 gannet and 2 seal pups at the Animal Shelter.

As you can imagine they are eating a healthy amount of fish and we really need your support.

From sandeels to sprats, herring and mackerel each animal is eating large numbers to help with their recuperation.

Seal pups Trinity and Eden are both putting on weight and we are pleased so far with their progress, but we are still 6 to 8 weeks away before they are healthy enough to be released back to the wild.

Currently we have 9 guillemots called Robin, Geoff, Grannie, Sands, Giles, Tinkerbell, Gordon, Cobo and David as well as John the gannet who are still under intensive care treatment that are too weak to go out on to our pools or be released.

We also have Jethou, Dave, Allen, Rachel and Chewy the guillemots who are on our recovery pond and are ready for release but we are waiting for a nice spell of weather to release them back to the wild.

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said 'It's been many years since the GSPCA have seen this many sick and injured birds and animals come in from the sea.'

'There are many that have sadly died as they have arrived or been to weak to save but we have been working hard at the GSPCA to save the many we have in our care and those that are back in the wild.'

'Some of the birds have had traces of oil, but many more are weak or underweight.'

'Every day we are having to wash the oiled birds in our care and some are now ready for release, but we just need a few days of good weather.'

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'Some of the guillemots have arrived as low as 580 grammes and its thanks to knowledge and care of the team here at the GSPCA that we are managing to save many of the birds that are rescued.'

'Sadly there are many that are being found dead washed up on the shores of the Bailiwick and there is a count around Guernsey tomorrow which there are more details on our website if you can help.'

'We are currently running our BIG FISH Appeal and asking for anyone who wants to make a difference to help save those birds and seals in our care that this awful weather has affected to please donate either online or through the Shelter.'
