On this sunny day the GSPCA Animal Shelter was visited by a junior class from Blanchelande College with over 20 of their students.
The group with 4 teachers were shown around the Shelter by Welfare and Education Officer Emma Trousdale. The children got to view the cats and hedgehogs, ferrets and baby birds, dogs being exercised and rabbits being brushed.
After a tour of the Shelter, Emma gave a talk about caring for animals and all about the work of the GSPCA. The children learnt about the 5 freedoms and about thinking how to care for their own pets.
During the talk a very special character popped in to say hello. Bernard the Shelter mascot made a surprise appearance and he had a very warm welcome from all of the children who all got the chance to shake his hand before he went for his afternoon walk.
Emma Trousdale Welfare and Education Officer said ‘We love to educate all ages to let them know about the hundreds of animals we help every day and how we have to raise the funds to care for them.’ ‘We currently have nearly 300 animals in our care, many of which have come in injured, sick or stray.’ ‘The children all seemed to enjoy the visit especially when they got to see the young hedgehog Lord.’
Sam Holland from Blanchelande College said ‘We all had a lovely time, thank you.’
All the children got to take home a the GSPCA newsletter and a leaflet about our Dog Show & Summer Fayre on the 7th July and the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday on the 9th September.
The GSPCA can arrange talks both on and off site and if anyone is interested please call Emma on 01481 257261 or email [email protected]
