Last week the GSPCA was inundated with calls of tethered cattle that were left out in the blizzard conditions.
Despite the awful weather, Shelter staff drove to many of the animals to check their condition and we reported our concerns to the owners.
With tethering of cattle being a legal practice within Guernsey the Shelter was unable to take any action other than passing our concerns to the owners of the animals.
The GSPCA have been discussing the new forthcoming animal welfare legislation with Commerce and Employment and currently there are no plans to stop tethering of cattle in Guernsey.
The GSPCA would like to see the 5 freedoms for all animals in Guernsey and as tethering of animals limits their ability to express natural behaviour it is a huge concern for animal welfare.
If you are concerned about tethering of cattle and would like to see change then the GSPCA would advise that you write your views to your local Deputy and the Commerce and Employment Department, as only with a change of law will this be addressed.
