For many years volunteering to help at the GSPCA with the animals has been a minimum of 14 years of age.
This has meant volunteers like Molly pictured above as she is below 14 has only been able to help with the many events and fund raisers we hold.
After discussions with our insurance company, a review of our risk assessments and procedures we are pleased to announce that volunteers of 13 years can now help.
With our last induction of 2016 this Tuesday at 6.30pm all ages are welcome to come along to find out about our work and how to get involved and for those that are 13 or above for the first time will be able to help on the animal departments at the GSPCA where we have over 300 animals in our care.
This comes as the age to start the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award is lowered from 14 to 13 years of age. Earlier this year on the 22nd September HRH The Earl Of Wessex, Prince Edward visited Guernsey meeting young islanders in celebration of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Diamond Anniversary. During his visit he also met Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager with a number of the GSPCA resident tortoise and as election of students from Les Beacamps High School who are carrying out their Duke of Edingburgh.
Each year the GSPCA has well over 40 young individuals volunteering at the Animal Shelter as part of their Duke of Edinburgh and with the GSPCA lowering the start age for volunteering this will help the many 13 year olds starting this wonderful award.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "For the first time volunteers from the age of 13 will be able to help out at the GSPCA Animal Shelter."
"We have many volunteers helping that are 14 or above with over 100 helpers every week at the GSPCA in the many roles from dog training to cleaning the animals out."
"Every weekend and through the week we see dozens of young volunteers working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards and we are so pleased that we are able to lower the age for them to start to help at the Shelter as they have lowered the start age to 13."
"Our next volunteer induction is this Tuesday and starts at 6.30pm until just after 8pm which all takes place at the GSPCA Animal Shelter in St Andrews."
"You don't need to book a place, if you have an interest in helping please just come along to find out more."
"For those very keen we will have GSPCA t-shirts and tops on sale and everyone leaves with a volunteer induction pack."
