Just over a week ago two Collared Lizards were rescued after being abandoned outside in the cold with their tank and no heating and would have surely perished if they hadn’t been rescued.

The GSPCA Ambulance Wardens went out to rescue and collect the lizards and on arrival it was apparent they weren’t well.

Once in the warm and provided with food their condition improved but after a closer veterinary examination there were real concerns for one of them.

Mexico on entry weighed just 30g looking very thin and Oklahoma 34g very bloated.

The vet who check them both had real concerns for Oklahoma who was rushed to Isabelle Vets where they performed an operation on her fallopian tubes to try and save her life but sadly she was so weak she didn’t make it through the recovery which is always difficult with any reptile.

Thankfully we can report that Mexico is improving each day and now doing well.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “I was on duty when the two Collared Lizards arrived with our Volunteer Ambulance Wardens Matt and Jen.”

“We have never had Collared Lizards in before at the GSPCA and both were very poorly on arrival.”

“If the finder hadn’t rescued them and then called us then both may have perished and it saddened us all when Oklahoma died after her operation which was the only chance she had as she was gravely ill.”

“We have seen a huge surge in reptiles in the last two years and currently have one snake awaiting to go to her new home, tanks of musk turtles and quite a few bearded dragons in need of homes.”

“Mexico the Collared Lizard will need a few more weeks before she is fully healthy but we are pleased with how she is doing and she is extremely sweet.”

“We ask anyone looking to adopt a reptile to ensure they read up and learn as much as they can as if they aren’t cared for properly they can easily be killed with too much or too little heat, the wrong diet or humidity so it is vital you know what you are doing.”

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said “It was so sad that we lost Oklahoma it really upset us but little Mexico is doing really well.”

“Mexico loves her greens and she is the sweetest little thing.”

“We have lots of reptiles in need of homes and would love to hear from those looking to adopt any of those in need.”

Lorna Prince Animal Welfare Manager said “If anyone has information on any animal being cruelly treated or neglected you can call the GSPCA on 01481 257261.”

“These lizards were abandoned and although rare in Guernsey we do have animals brought in each year that are left with no care that we investigate to find out the reasons why and if anything can be done.”

“Thankfully Mexico is doing well at the GSPCA but if anyone feels they can’t care for their pets please do call as we are here to help.”

Steve continued “All this week we celebrate 145 years since we were founded with our GSPCA Purple Week and to find out how you can get involved please visit http://gspca.org.gg/blog/gspca-purple-week-starts-tomorrow-%E2%80%93-are-you-getting-involved ."
