Found - Stray Tortoise - Unusual post for the GSPCA

On the 11th May a very different delivery was made by the post man.

A stray tortoise was fond on L'Ancresse by a Guernsey Post staff member and brought into the GSPCA.

'Skimmer' as staff and volunteers have named the male, adult tortoise was found on La Garenne.

As with many tortoise Skimmer is quite distinctive.

Each year we help around 30 stray tortoise which are handed into the GSPCA and we find the owners for nearly every one.

Thankfully he is safe and warm at the GSPCA, but we are appealing for the owner to come forward.

"They dropped in a stray tortoise and with social media making a huge difference in reuniting stray animals we would like to ask the public to please share this picture of 'Skimmer' as we have called the stray tortoise, as it has certainly helps speed up the time in finding owners for lost animals."

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "Skimmer isn't the only tortoise at the GSPCA as we have 6 residents that live with us here in St Andrews."

"The 6 tortoise we have are Hilda who is 63 years old, Hugh, Tony, Ridley, Master Jeremy Vine and Scramble the youngest at around 5 years of age and they all help us with the educational work we carry out every year and live on our Tortoise Top Hill."

"Did you know a group of tortoise is called a 'Creep' and where they would live is called a 'Rockery'."

"We would love to find the owner of 'Skimmer' as we have called him and if anyone has any information please do get in touch with us at the GSPCA."

"All next week we have guided tours at the GSPCA and please give us a call if you would like to book a place."
