After months of care and with good weather on our side the GSPCA plan to release Marty the seal pup back in the wild tomorrow.
With six seal pups the GSPCA have been the busiest it has ever been looking after what were all starving animals close to death when they were first rescued and we are delighted to announce the first is now ready to be returned to the wild.
Marty who was rescued in Jersey will be returning to his home waters thanks to a lovely family from Jersey who are helping provide the transport for the release and having had a vet check and all relevant paperwork in place he will make the journey on Good Friday to Les Écréhous.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Yesterday Vet and GSPCA President John Knight came in to do a health check on Marty the grey seal pup who now at 51kg is ready to go back to the wild.”
“All the paperwork is in place and we have a lovely family from jersey who is helping take us and Marty back to his home waters in Jersey.”
“Like with Sami two years ago the plan for his release will be at Les Écréhous all being well on Good Friday on what should be a lovely day.”
“When he first arrived he was almost a third to a quarter of the body weight he should have been and now after months of care he looks like a fat sausage so he is ready for the wild.”
“We have to thank all that have donated to his and the other 5 seal pups care and we hope to return some of the Guernsey pups to the wild very soon.”

Geoff George Head of Marine Mammals said “After months of care it is great to have Marty ready for the wild.”
“We was so thin when he arrived from Jersey and needed around the clock care.”
“We are really grateful to the Eeles family who have come over once again to help us return a Jersey seal pup back to the wild.”
“Two years ago the helped get Sami the Jersey seal pup back to Les Écréhous and it is great to get Marty back their too.”
“Of the 5 other seals 2 are very close to being ready for their home of Guernsey waters and we will update on how Marty’s release goes and how the others progress.”
Steve continued “With six seal pups our facilities have been used to their maximum capacity for seals and we are currently fund raising to build a new Wildlife Hospital.”
“From donating to the facility to Buying a Brick there are many ways to get involved or why not get involved with our Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday next month.”
