On the 15th February 2012 Sarah Ozanne joined the team at the GSPCA as a volunteer dog walker and started helping at the Animal Shelter in many of the departments.
Her interest in the work at the Shelter quickly grew and after applying for a full time post at the GSPCA she started her career in December of the same year.
Since that time Sarah has worked in every department, helped run the GSPCA flag days, cared for seal pups, hand reared baby hedgehogs, visited Shelters and rescues in the UK, been interviewed on TV, given guided tours, covered nights shifts and the ambulance, trained new volunteers and placements, groomed dogs, helped with Slovakian puppies and even adopted one, cared for Olivia the turtle and many of the seal pups, with many more tales to tell.
Although Sarah will continue to help the team and animals at the GSPCA last month she completed her last day in her role as a Full Time Animal Care Assistant to join the team at Isabelle Vets as she begins a new career in veterinary nursing.
Before Sarah left the team surprised her with a few gifts and cards as a way of thanks for her dedicated service and wonderful positive attitude to helping animals in Guernsey.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager asked Sarah a few questions about her time at the GSPCA before she had her last day and here is what she said -
Why did you want to work for the GSPCA?
Sarah said ‘As I child I was always interested in wildlife and animals but my education pushed me into a different direction of art and music. After studying at 21 someone suggested volunteering at the GSPCA and loved it, especially with the hedgehogs.’
What has been your favourite thing about working for the GSPCA?
Sarah said ‘It's difficult to pick one thing as my favourite as I have encountered so much in my 4 years but I have enjoyed helping with Olivia the turtle and hand rearing the hedgehogs.’
What would you like to see us develop, build or improve at the GSPCA?
Sarah said ‘It would be nice to develop the hog unit as we have been full with hedgehogs over the winter and the hutches could do with sprucing up.’
What was your first pet?
Sarah said ‘My first pet was a hamster but my first pet I really looked after and enjoyed was my chinchilla Harriet.’
What is your favourite species and why?
Sarah said ‘When I first started it was hedgehogs as I gave hardly seen any out in the wild and they are so entertaining and full of character. However since working with a variety of animals I find it hard now to decide as they all have wonderful qualities.’
What have you enjoyed learning about at the GSPCA?
Sarah said ‘I have enjoyed learning about the wildlife from the senior members. From distinguishing species to feeding to rehabilitation and release.’
What would you like to see someone sponsor or donate towards at the GSPCA?
Sarah said ‘We have had a lot of birds lately for adoption, wildlife and for welfare reasons so we are going through a lot of bird seed so maybe some money towards their upkeep.’
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We didn’t ask if Sarah would miss working at the GSPCA as we all knew the answer and we will all miss her here as she has been a fantastic member of the team who has worked in every department, helped cover 24/7, fund raised to supported events and so much more.”
“It has been amazing to see how Sarah started as a young keen volunteer into one of the most experienced and knowledgeable members of staff and we all wish her luck in her new veterinary career although she has promised to come back to help when she can and especially with hand rearing baby hedgehogs which she really enjoys.”
“In the years Sarah has helped run the flag days and other events she has helped with she has been part is raising over £10,000 for animals in Guernsey and since 2012 helped with what will be in excess of 15,000 wild and domestic animals and birds through the doors not to mention the thousands that come for their holidays with us each year and the many we help off site.”
“It’s fantastic to see members of staff and the team grow in skills and progress into something they have always wanted to do which will continue to help animals in Guernsey.”
“We will of course miss Sarah in her full time role but we are blessed with an amazing team of staff and volunteers and our next volunteer induction is this Thursday at 630pm.”
Helen Holmes GSPCA Admin Manager said “I have worked alongside Sarah in many of the departments helping her and she has always been wonderful to work with and so caring.”
“We will all miss her and we all wish her luck at Isabelle Vets and look forward to the times she will pop in and help out.”
