With the recent stormy weather we have seen many many sick and injured seabirds and at the GSPCA.

To donate to the care of these birds please visit www.paypal.me/DonateGSPCA

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said “The recent rough weather has really hit our seabirds and we have had many in thin, tired and one that was oiled.”

Beckie Bailey Animal Care Assistant said “Today we have had a young Shag rescued that is not strong enough to be out in the wild.”

“Many of the sea birds we have do really well being fed Sand Eels andwe are appealing for donations.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Earlier this week we had an oiled fulmar with multiple health problems and injuries found at L’Eree that was so poorly there was nothing we or the vets could do, which is always heart breaking for us all.”

“It is so hard during periods of stormy weather, especially in the coming wintery months as we see oiled sea birds arrive needing our help.”

“The rough seas often stirs up oil settled on the ocean floor and when a sea bird lands in it, it causes them to be unable to fly and lose the ability to float as it strips the natural oils that in turn means they can’t hunt, and not only do they starve but as they try to clean the oil from their feathers this causes internal poisoning.”

“If you see any injured sea birds be aware they often have sharp beaks and they often try to peck at your eyes so throwing a towel or jumper over them is the best way to secure them, and always come from the seaside as if you chase towards the sea you may be unable to catch them.”

“The best thing to do is if you see one call us immediately on our emergency 24/7 helpline on 01481 257261 and press option 2.”

“You can also help by donating to their care by calling us on 01481 257261, at the Shelter or online www.paypal.me/DonateGSPCA .”

“It’s also seal pup season and if you spot one please don’t approach it but give us a call for advice.”

"So if you find a sick, injured or oiled animal, bird or seal pup please call our 24/7 helpline on 01481 257261 and here is a link to a page with helpful information - https://www.gspca.org.gg/animals/wildlife-advice .”
