Yesterday morning the team at the GSPCA were called to rescue what was thought to be a dolphin or porpoise.
GSPCA Animal Ambulance at the time was Sarah Langlois who contacted Geoff George who heads up Marine Mammal care and they headed to Perelle where the poorly mammal had been spotted.
GSPCA President and Les Eturs Vet John Knight was also called to attend the scene where the team spent some time trying to refloat the poorly animal.
The young common dolphin twice tried coming back to shore so the decision was made to take the dolphin out to deeper water which was kindly assisted by a local boat owner.
The dolphin received a series of treatments before being released but sadly the dolphin has been sadly found deceased this morning close to where it was scene yesterday.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We are al saddened to report that the young common dolphin that we were called out to yesterday has sadly died.”
When marine mammals beach themselves it often means they are very poorly and it is extremely difficult to get them back to the water as they can often rebeach themselves due to the ailments or issues they have.”
“GSPCA team members Sarah and Geoff did all they could with our President and Vet John Knight and we are thankful to Liz for reporting the poorly dolphin and to Mr Brehaut who helped with his boat.”
“If anyone finds any injured marine mammal it is important not to approach it but to call us on 257261 for advice and so we can assess the situation.”
“We currently have 4 marine mammals being the 4 seal pups all are doing well and will hopefully be back in the wild soon.”
“There are many ways you can help support our vital 24/7 work and donate or raise funds for the hundreds of animals in our care.”
“With over 140 hedgehogs, 4 seal pups, dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, fish, reptiles and many birds we help over 3000 animals through the doors every year.”
“With so many animals in our care we would love you to join our sponsor scheme to help us each month.”
