This month Guernsey has without doubt seen more fireworks over a longer period of time than for most in memory.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have seen the busiest firework period for displays over the longest period than any can seem to remember which has caused many issues for the island animals which is clear from the recent survey we have run at the GSPCA.

“In less than 2 weeks we have had 2213 responses to our Firework Survey which we launched at the start of the month making it the most popular survey the GSPCA has ever launched.”

“With 1,799 responses saying firework laws are not strict enough there is clearly a real concern for the islands animals and those that suffer from anxiety and PTSD.”

“The feedback and concerns for animals and people has been clear, but there is also a feeling that there are options to continue celebrations in a kinder way that also doesn’t impact on animal welfare in such a way that is has clearly this year, over so many days.”

“It was surprising that only 55% in the survey were aware of the States of Guernsey firework notification system which is shown from feedback as there were many additional events not registered that were not listed taking some pet and animal owners by surprise.”

“With the 1000’s or responses we have a lot to digest but what we can see are suggestions that shine through such as the 57.84% taking part in the survey feeling that only public displays should take place with many suggesting drone, laser shows or silent fireworks in place to what we currently have.”

“With just over 30,000 registering to vote in our last election in Guernsey, to have a survey with over 2000 responses has been an incredible response which we will continue to monitor and appreciate all feedback.”

“Despite doing all we can for the animals in our care at the GSPCA the fireworks also caused distress for the animals at the Shelter, not least to a 15 year old blind cat called Mr Blinkle Squeak who was very distressed and clearly upset on more than one occasion.”

“What is extremely surprising in regards the use of fireworks is how the use does seem to ignore the Environmental Pollution (Guernsey) Law, 2004 with the amount of litter created with over 100 known events and also the Animal Welfare (Guernsey) Ordinance, 2012 with the distress is causes to pets, livestock and wildlife.”

“We also had stray and lost animals we had to help each day with one evening 5 dogs needing our assistance.”

“We had reports of firework waste from rockets in fields with horses and livestock, not to mention the news of 11 budgies in an aviary dying and I think many will have seen the news of the Red Panda in Edinburgh Zoo.”

“While we look at the feedback we wanted to share the results to date on the findings and we have Deputies interested in the feedback and results in the survey.”

“To enable this feedback we have had to sign up for Survey Monkey due to the huge number of results.”

“Thankfully they have kindly provided a charity discount but if anyone would like to donate towards the £300 it has cost you can do so by this link https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA) .”

“We will continue to go through the results and appreciate any further feedback.”
