In the aftermath of the destructive Storm Ciaran, the Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) is reaching out to the community for support in rebuilding and repairing significant storm damage to their facilities.
PLEASE DONATE NOW https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA)
The GSPCA, dedicated to the welfare of animals, is facing extensive repairs at their Rue des Truchots Animal Shelter, with damages amounting to thousands of pounds. The storm wreaked havoc, causing destruction to enclosures, fences, and wildlife habitats. The GSPCA is urgently seeking donations to address the immediate needs of the Shelter and continue their vital work in animal welfare.
The storm's toll includes critical repairs such as fence restoration, estimated at £3000, and the removal of fallen trees and branches, surpassing £2500 in expenses. The GSPCA is also faced with the daunting task of replacing damaged and devastated aviaries, requiring £15000 for new enclosures.
Steve Byrne, the GSPCA Manager, expressed the urgency of the situation, stating, "The impact of Storm Ciaran on our facilities has been devastating.”
“We have to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals in our care and your support is crucial in helping us rebuild and continue our mission."
“We have to extend a heartfelt thanks to all that have donated so far and a special mention to the team and many volunteers that have helped in the clean up operation.”
“We have had many injured and poorly animals arrive due to the storm and awful weather including Barnacle Bill the loggerhead turtle who is doing well and is now eating well.”
"Thankfully all the animals that would normally live in the devastated enclosures were taken inside so are well but now have no-where outside to go and we desperately need to raise funds to carry out the repairs and replace the many aviaries and enclsures that are in pieces."
Yvonne Chauvel, the GSPCA Animal Care Supervisor, added, "The damage extends beyond the physical structures; it has affected our ability to provide the best care for our animals as many have now had to be kept indoors.”
“Every donation, no matter the size, will make a significant difference in helping us recover from this setback."

The GSPCA is also appealing for funds for their BIG BUILD APPEAL, aimed at enhancing their facilities for the long term. Details can be found at https://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/biggest-appeal-ever-gspca-big-build-appeal-buy-brick-build-brighter-future-animals-guernsey.
The GSPCA extends its heartfelt thanks to the dedicated GSPCA team and the numerous volunteers who have been tirelessly involved in the cleanup operation. Special recognition is given to the invaluable assistance from staff at CBO Projects, Northern Trust, and Black Vanilla, who volunteered and provided crucial support, especially in restoring the devastated enclosures.
Fortunately, no animals in the care of the GSPCA were harmed during the storm, as precautionary measures were taken to bring them all inside before the severe weather conditions began.
