GSPCA seal pup release in the next few days but who will it be?

The GSPCA are currently planning the third seal pup release of 2023 but who will it be?

Geoff George Head of Marine Mammals said “The most recent seal pup to arrive at the GSPCA is Peej who is a long way from being ready but we have 4 very healthy seal pups that are all looking very well.”

“We are currently looking which are those fittest for the next release which will hopefully be in the next few days.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “This year we celebrate 150years and we seem to be extremely busy rescuing seal pups.”

“It was lovely earlier recently to release Shakespeare who was rescued in Jersey in October 2022 and Emilia in Guernsey in December 2022 and both were less than half their body weight and extremely poorly when they arrived.”

“We are now planning the next seal pup release which will hopefully happen in the next few days.”

“The 5 grey seal pups Henny, Echo, Hector and Cleopatra rescued this season who are the likely candidates, but Peej the most recent certainly isn’t ready and we are assessing how close he is to the other pups to decided the best plan along with their weight and condition”

“With now 5 seal pups we are going through many fish each day and there are many ways to support their care from donating online to supporting our 150 year celebrations helping seals and other animals in Guernsey.”

“In the last decade we have rescued and released 27 grey seal pups back into the wild and the 5 in our care and keeping us very busy.”

"We have some great web pages with advice on what to do if you see a seal pup which are being born at this time of year or oiled birds, although we are only a call away on 257261."

"With young seal pups the main piece of advice is to please not approach them as you can scare their mother away and if you see one to please call us on 257261 and we can make sure they are safe or give advice."

"For those out with dogs please don't let them approach seal pups as this can scare their mothers off and if they were to bite your dog and cause a nasty injury."

"As well as wildlife we have to ensure our own pets and animals are safe and secure with the high winds as we often see dogs escaping from gates being blown open to farm animals escaping."

“The pup season will soon be here again and if you do see a seal pup please do give us a call on 257261 or send a few pictures via our facebook or [email protected] so we can monitor them.”
