At the GSPCA we take safety of the staff, volunteers, visitors and animals very seriously.

With between 200 and 300 animals at the Shelter at any one time the team need to ensure how to act in any incident or accident.

All staff and volunteers are required to go through a comprehensive induction and read through a training booklet before they can help on site.

To go hand in hand with this the GSPCA are always looking to expand the skills and knowledge of the team and last week we welcomed G4S who provided a training session in fire safety and use of emergency fire fighting equipment.

The training had been arranged some time ago, but with the incident at Manchester Dogs Home only days before the training took place and the sad loss of over 50 dogs lives at their kennels the 12 GSPCA staff taking part took every piece of information to heart to ensure if ever an incident occurred here in Guernsey they could use the skills taught by the training officers from G4S.

Kevin Walsh from G4S lead the training session which included a talk and short video in the GSPCA Training and Event Room before heading outside to their equipment where the GSPCA team members were instructed in the use of fire fighting equipment.  Each staff member had a practical session with 3 different fire extinguisher’s and a fire blanket on a variety of combustibles.

Last week a private kennels experienced a fire with the loss of 20 dogs in East Yorkshire , again showing how important it is to ensure that your staff and volunteers are aware of exactly what to do in the event of a fire.

At the GSPCA Seafront Sunday on the 14th September a collection took place to help the Manchester Dogs Home and you can still drop donations at the Shelter which we will pass on to them to help with their rebuilding project.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “The team from G4S were fantastic and the all of the staff here really appreciated their training session, and we all took a lot from it.”

“It doesn’t matter where you work or the precautions in place, your team needs to be trained in the event of any emergency and we are extremely grateful to Kevin and Andy from G4S for explaining and demonstrating how to use the fire equipment and what to do in the event of a fire.”

“The fire training from G4S only takes around an hour and it really could help save lives.”

“A huge thank you from all of the team from the GSPCA to G4S, we all really appreciated the professional and informative training session.”

Anna Paint GSPCA Senior Animal Care Assistant said “Every year we are called out to help animals and owners that have been affected by fires in Guernsey and we do all we can to help.”

“We have an amazing fire fighting team in Guernsey but we all need to know what to do and how to use the equipment to ensure we all have the best chance for ourselves and our animals if ever we were faced with a fire.”

“A huge thank you to the team from G4S for the fire training at the GSPCA.”

Kevin Walsh from G4S said “We arranged the GSPCA fire training in the morning before they opened for the public and from the theory through to the practical training it only takes around an hour depending on the size of the group.”

“The training that we provide from G4S includes the different types of fires you could face to the correct equipment to use and how to use them safely without putting yourself or others at risk.”

“At G4S we always ensure that we cater the training session for the environment the staff work in so they are aware of the risks around them.”

“If you would like to know more about our fire training please call us on 265133.”
