This week Guernsey has seen its first new animal welfare laws in nearly a decade and this ironically coincided in a week where GSPCA Animal Welfare Manager Lorna Chadwick held training with many of the GSPCA team on Animal Welfare and Cruelty Investigations.
The GSPCA has a team of over 50 staff and over 800 volunteers helping ensure our work 24/7 365 days a year from rescuing sick and injured animals to investigating cruelty, calls to dogs in hots cars to the many other services we carry out which list is an extensive and ever growing list.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Each Wednesday we try to put aside time for formal training with staff, placements and volunteers sometimes within house and as is next week outside trainers as we have Guernsey Fire Service coming in to train our team.”
“This week not only did the States of Guernsey pass its first new animal welfare laws in over a decade, but our Welfare Manager Lorna Chadwick also provided a training session on our Welfare and Cruelty Investigation work, our procedures and the challenges we face.”
“The GSPCA have to work within the laws of Guernsey to help animals in need although many concerns we receive sometimes up to 1000 a year and although many are routine checks and simple advice we do see each year serious concerns and unless we approach these in the correct manner then this can affect outcomes for both the animals and those involved.”
“We have an incredible team at the GSPCA but we are always striving to develop their skills and with cruelty investigation and education at the heart of what we do it is essential our team are well trained and know the extreme challenges we can face.”
“Our Welfare Manager gave an excellent training session this week on our Welfare work which the Welfare Department carries out and it opened many eyes to those not on the front line with some of the sights that we see from rabbits kept in awful conditions to the sad sights of those not seeking treatment for their pets.”
“It also highlighted challenges like those calls we get from those trying to cause trouble for those they may not have a good relationship with which sadly is a regular occurrence, to those that not only the animals are suffering.”
Lorna Chadwick GSPCA Welfare Manager said “The Welfare Department at the GSPCA deals daily with calls, emails and reports of cruelty which ranges from neighbour disputes to serious allegations which involves us working with the authorities.”
“The GSPCA have been involved with many serious animal welfare cases in recent years, not to mention our 151 years of history.”
“The GSPCA team are dedicated to helping animal welfare in Guernsey and the training session we held this week helped ensure we upskill the new team members and refresh the skills of those that help carry this work out every day.”

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "Even after more than 25 years working at the GSPCA we still see shoking sights of animal cruelty and it is so important all of our team know how to deal and help with these sensitive and often upsetting cases."
