From visiting the GSPCA to now A&E we seem to have very inquisitive cows here in Guernsey.

Also a few weeks ago a herd decided to pop by the GSPCA Animal Shelter.

On Saturday night the GSPCA Animal Ambulance Warden was called out to a stop our ambulance rarely visits.

Sarah Harrison GSPCA team member and ambulance warden said “On Saturday we had one of our more unusual calls at around 10pm.”

“It’s not everyday our warden gets a call from the Joint Emergency Control Centre to say there are cows at A&E.”

“I said I beg your pardon as I wasn’t expecting to hear that there were cows at Elizabeth Hospital.”

“I said I'd thought I'd seen it all and we had a quick giggle before getting onto how we were going to help the cows.”

“The JESCC team member asked how we were going to deal with the problem and I said I would inform them they were not at the vet, to which we both laughed and then said I would head out to help them and try and contact the farmer that might own them.”

“We couldn’t get hold of the farmer we though they might belong to so I headed out to help them.”

“When it comes to moving cows the more people there are to create a s wall the better, so my partner came with me.”

“Getting to the hospital the security had already alearted the ambulance of the problem, so we needed to get them moved on quickly.”

“On arriving there were two young Guernsey cows right outside A&E, thankfully a member of the farmers family had already arrived and there was a small group of willing volunteers to help.”

“We manged to explain to the cows they were in the wrong place and escorted back to a secure field and got them both back to safety with the rest of their herd.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We never know what we might be called out to at the GSPCA.”

“Once again we had another interesting call on the weekend, this time to 2 young Guernsey cows at A&E which was a first.”

“You expect to see animals at the vet or the vet at a farm but not two cows standing outside a hospital.”

“Thankfully they were both well and thanks to our team member Sarah and some kind volunteers they were returned to a secure field very quickly.”

“Thank you to everyone that helped keep the cows safe and get them back to a secure field.”

“In recent years we have seen a stray horse walk into the car park and even two goats walk on site to hand themselves in when they escaped their field and even a herd of cows handed themselves in recently.”

“Of all lost animals large farm animals and horses are always hugely concerning as not only can they cause damage through no fault of their own they can pose a real risk to drivers, pedestrians and of course to themselves.”

“This is something we have raised with he authorities and States Vets on a number of occasions as it would be wonderful to have a quick way to notify farm animal and horse owners quickly that animals are loose for their safety and the safety of those around them.”

“With any found animals or lose farm animals you can call our emergency line on 01481 257261 24/7.”

“We also have our lost and found advice page https://www.gspca.org.gg/services/lost-found-advice which you can report your pets missing online.”

“It is rare for us to have many farm animals in need of homes but we do have chickens and sometimes cockerels in need and to register your interest in adopting an animal from the GSPCA please go to https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=gspca&method=online_form_html&formid=23 .”

“If you are interested in becoming a volunteer warden or join the team in anyway please check out this link https://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/could-you-become-dog-walker-gspca-or-animal-ambulance-volunteer-withoutus-withoutyou .”
