The Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre was officially set up as a charity at the beginning of 2005. The centre at Penrose Farm has been taking in hedgehogs since 2001 and has helped thousands of hedgehogs in Guernsey since this time.  Sadly Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue led by Dawn Robin and her team of volunteers are having to close it’s doors.

Fortunately Dawn is not disheartened with the outlook of hedgehogs and their future in Guernsey as the GSPCA have been working hard improving the facilities of their wildlife unit over the past few months.

Dawn and her team often have in excess of 100 hedgehogs in their care which they are rehabilitating for release but unfortunately due to a number of circumstances they have now stopped taking in hedgehogs and are asking any member of public to call the GSPCA or take them along to the animal shelter if they find any that are sick or injured.

Dawn Robin from Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue said ‘We do not want anyone to worry about the hedgehogs in our care as we are going to carry on looking after these until they can be released.’ ‘We are working closely with the GSPCA to ensure that they are prepared for what can be a very busy time of year.’ ‘I would like to thank everyone for their support, that have volunteered or fund raised over the years, it has been heart warming to see the compassion on the island for our little prickled friends.’

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager said ‘What Dawn and her team has done for hedgehogs in Guernsey is just outstanding.’ ‘The commitment and hard work that she and her volunteers have put in is second to none.’  ‘We are preparing with Dawn to ensure we are set up for this huge influx and we are hoping that Dawn and her fantastic team of volunteers will want to carry on and help with the hedgehogs here at the GSPCA.’

Between the GSPCA and Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue well in excess of a 1000 hedgehogs are brought in sick, injured or orphaned and are released back into the wild every year.  But without the kind hearted public who rescue those in need then many of these may well have suffered and not be with us today.

If anyone would like to donate to the care of these or the many injured wildlife at the GSPCA then please call 01481 257261, call in the shelter or donate online www.gspca.org.gg/fundraising

If you find a hedgehog then if you go to http://www.hedgehogrescue.org.gg/infoandadvice.php you can find out what to do.

We will soon be posting pictures of the developments from the wildlife unit so please watch this space.
