On Monday starts Hedgehog Week and to kick off the awareness week the GSPCA have launched two competitions for those aged between 4 and 16 years of age.
With 200 to 300 hedgehogs rescued every year at the GSPCA we see all ages with a variety of health problems.
Sarah Ozanne Animal Care Assistant in the Hedgehog Unit said 'With Spring we see hedgehogs awake and starting to give birth.'
'We would urge anyone who comes across a Mum and her young not to touch them and to give us a call for advice.'
'Mother hedgehogs with their young are always best left alone if in a safe area, as disturbing them can mean that the babies don't survive.'
'At the GSPCA we have launched the competition to help raise awareness of hedgehogs, how to care for them and the dangers they come across.'
'The winning posters we will print off at the GSPCA and use around Guernsey to help promote the care of our prickly little friends.'
Lucy Ogier Animal Care Assistant who has worked with Sarah to put the competition together also said 'We are hoping to get schools and groups involved and if anyone is interested then there is information on our website or just give us a call.'
'There are loads of prizes and just some are from Waitrose, hedgehog food from Spikes, hedgehogs for the garden from Gaudions and more to come.'
'The big prize is an Angry Bird Ipod Docking Station which will be given to an overall winner from all entrants.'
'Both the hedgehog house making competition and the awareness poster can be entered up until Friday 6th June.'
'We will want to come out to see the top entries of the the hedgehog house competition to decide the winners which we will announce on the 12th June.'
'We are also arranging a hedgehog talk and tour at the Shelter very soon to promote hedgehog care and we will let you know more very soon.'
Sarah Creasey Animal Welfare and education Officer said 'If anyone schools or groups would like a talk on hedgehogs then we can come out or arrange something at the Shelter and all they have to do is give me a call on 257261 or email me on [email protected].'
'In the Spring from the baby hoglets at risk to those strimming and cutting hedgehogs we see all sorts of problems that put these wonderful little mammals at risk.'
