The GSPCA is about to release it’s first hedgehogs of 2012 this evening and we are asking if you spot one to please let us know.

The Shelter has had up to 70 hedgehogs at any one time and many are now healthy and heavy enough to be released back into the wild.

The first four that are going have been acclimatising in our soft release pens that were recently built over the last couple of weeks.  The Shelter has been waiting for the right weather conditions to let this first group go.

You can clearly identify hedgehogs that the GSPCA has cared for as they have a small circle of purple paint on them and a white tag on their spines similar to ID methods that other charities use.

If you do see this then please let us know.  The white tags have numbers but please don’t stress the hedgehogs unduly.  An easy way to tell if it’s a male of female hedgehog is that the GSPCA has released the boys with purple paint on the bottom left corner of their back and the girls on the top right near their shoulder.

Some of you may remember Top Off the hedgehog that came into the Shelter after a strimmer injury back in March this year.  He is doing well and although we can’t release him back into the wild he has been homed into a walled garden and is settling in nicely.

Annie Janes Animal Care Assistant said ‘The finders of Luca and Reg are releasing these hogs for us this evening and we are letting Haith and Hank go back into the wild.’  ‘Many of these hogs came in with horrendous injuries and it is so rewarding to be letting them go back to their natural habitat.’  ‘We have quite a few that we will be releasing in stages over the next few weeks but we would like to remind public out strimming and hedge cutting to check the areas before proceeding with work as this is often how hedgehogs are injured.’

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said ‘This is why we are here.’  ‘It is a very busy time for us during the spring and it is wonderful to see these hedgehogs going back to their natural habitat.’  ‘We still need help though to care for those at the Shelter and if anyone would like to volunteer please get in touch.’  ‘We also need lots of long shredded paper for their bedding so if any offices can help please let us know.’
