On Sunday the GSPCA held our 6th Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday.
Once again we had a wonderful and an amazing day and there are so many thanks to give out. May we say a HUGE thanks to all involved with a truly amazing day celebrating animals in Guernsey.
With a dry start the stall holders and many volunteers started setting up from 7am and the Seafront was alive with activity. As the event started at 10am the road was full of stalls, charities, supporters, visitors and their many pets mostly dogs although a few others in the crowds.
Sadly shortly after the day started the heavens opened and cover was sought by the many there but thankfully within an hour the rain stopped, it cleared and dried as the road refilled for those that supported who had a wonderful day.
It was wonderful to welcome the team from Island FM who broadcast live on the day with their banners from DWA who had sponsored the advertising and day as well as the Cherry Godfrey Cash Shower which was on display although not in use due to the challenging weather.
Islandmums ran a free kids zone with all sorts of games and chalk drawing which was extremely popular.
The 1st class of the Fun Dog Show was judged by Marcus from Island FM who then handed over to the lovely JKT from BBC Guernsey who did an amazing job judging the huge classes entered and more details will follow on the results.
The GSPCA Animal Mascot 5-a-side football once again was hilarious entertaining the crowds. A team was entered by Isabelle Vets who played against a charity team made up of GSPCA animals including our mascot Bernard and also Louis the Lobster representing Male Uprising Guernsey who was there to help promote the Sun-Safety campaign. The campaign is a joint initiative between Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) and the Health Promotion Unit. The aim of the campaign has been to reduce the incidence of skin cancer in Guernsey and reduce the number of people presenting late with skin cancer.
After a very hard fought game and a lot of fun with involvement from the crowd Isabelle Vets were declared after penalties the 2017 GSPCA Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday Giant Animal Mascot 5-a-side champions.
The GSPCA had a selection of animals from the Shelter on display and as a result have found homes for rabbits and generated a lot of interest in others.
So far over £3000 has been raised with funds still arriving, interest in volunteering and sponsoring the animals was asked, many found out about our work, the animals, charity shop and our wish list all adding to a day that spread word of the work that we carry out 24/7 at the GSPCA.
Many other charities joined us to promote their work, as well as groups, businesses, stall holders, food vendors and fantastic musicians.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "The thanks for all those involved in the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday is immense from those in the preparations, the day itself to unpacking back at the Shelter, there are hundreds of people that help make it such a special day."
"Despite a huge amount of organising and a very challenging downpour on the day we all managed to have a really wonderful time as the day helps celebrate animals in Guernsey."
"I think on the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday we must see more dogs in one place than any other time here in Guernsey, many of which we have rehomed, trained or even boarded at the GSPCA."
"The Giant Animal Mascot 5-a-side was once again so much fun and it was lovely to welcome Louis the Lobster representing Male Uprising Guernsey who was there to help promote the Sun-Safety campaign and joined the GSPCA animal team and played against Isabelle Vets who after a very funny match were declared 2017 champions."
"The Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday isn't just about raising the much needed funds for the animals in our care it is also about the wonderful work caring for and helping animals in Guernsey and to celebrate the wonderful community we have."
"This Sunday we are joining the Arts Seafront Sunday with our stall so if you can help or can support the day we'd love to see you on the Crown Pier."
