On Wednesday last week Ellie Jones the CEO of Liberate kindly came along to the GSPCA to speak to the team about Liberate and how they as an organisation exist to promote fairness and equality.

Liberate is a Guernsey-registered charity established in 2014 to promote fairness and equality and they provide support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ+) community, together with their friends and families within the Bailiwick of Guernsey (Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm) which the team got to learn about and much more.

They want to stand as positive role models and provide a voice for the Bailiwick’s LGBTQ+ community and campaign for positive change in laws and opinions with the aim to promote acceptance of everyone identifying as LGBTQ+. They aim to do this with the input and support of the LGBTQ+ community and want to stand as positive role models and provide a voice for the Bailiwick’s LGBTQ+ community.  They wish to put in place support services for LGBTQ+ people growing up and growing old within the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

They wish to create an island community where everyone stands in equal footing with their neighbour regardless of their ability, age, beliefs, gender identity, race, religion, sex or sexuality.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We are so grateful for Ellie from Liberate giving up time to come and speak to our team about all that they do from promoting fairness and equality to better understanding the challenges across the world many still face.”

“The GSPCA recently joined the Rainbow Mark which is a visible sign to show we are LGBTQ+ friendly and are committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion, in line with 5 principles.”

“We are part of all levels of the community and have an amazing team from all walks of life, as is the range of animals we help as we never know who might need our help and it is important to the GSPCA that our team have the skills and knowledge to help and support all in need where and when we can.”

“We are always looking for speakers to come in and talk to our team and help train us and in recent weeks from first aid to dementia, customer care to strategy, fire to behaviour we cover not just animal related topics but a whole range of subjects and love to hear from those that can upskill or enlighten our team.”

“If you would like to help please do email me [email protected] and those looking to join our team as staff or volunteers check out www.gspca.org.gg .”

“A huge thanks to Ellie and Liberate for a fantastic morning last week.”

The Rainbow Mark is a visible sign displayed by participating organisations across the Channel Islands to indicate that they are LGBTQ+ friendly and are committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion, in line with several key principles, which you can find in the Rainbow Mark Guidance.

It is a kitemark initiative that provides participating organisations with visible signage (e.g. a window sticker) to demonstrate their participation and commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion. Signing up is free, and participating organisations may include premises such as offices, public buildings, beauty salons, kiosks, cafes, bars, restaurants, gyms, libraries, supermarkets, and nightclubs. Essentially, this includes anywhere that people visit as customers or clients.

The Rainbow Mark offers introductory-level advice on LGBTQ+ inclusion via the Rainbow Mark Guidance.

Further certifications and training are available, including ‘Pride Certified’ and ‘ DIFERA’.
