This week we have received a young kitten that was rescued out at Icart Point.

The GSPCA are concerned that there may be others and if you are out in the area and come across any please get in touch with the Shelter.

Tiger as he has been named was found extremely thin, no mother in site and full of worms, fleas and may not have survived if he had not been rescued.

This time of year kittens are often rescued and brought into the GSPCA and just this morning another feral was rescued and brought in from the Bouet area who is now named Molly.

Cats can reproduce several times a year, and kittens mature quickly, just 2 unneutered cats can quickly become 2,000. In fact, the feline reproduction statistics are staggering. 2 uncontrolled breeding cats produce: 2 litters a year, at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter. Continued breeding will produce 12 cats the first year, 66 cats the second year, 2,201 cats in the third year, 3,822 cats in the fourth year, 12,680 cats in the fifth year, and so on.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'Both ourselves and other rescues in Guernsey at this time of year are often inundated with young animals and especially kittens.'

'We are extremely concerned about Tiger's litter mates and if anyone is out at Icart Point please keep your eyes peeled and let us know straight away if you see anything.'

'Tiger is only 6 to 7 weeks and with the average litter of a cat being between 4 and 6 there is a good chance others out there will be in need of help.'

'If your dogs aren't good with small animals it is also a good idea if you are in the area to keep them on a lead or walk them in other areas for the safety of the young kittens.'

If you see any kittens or any animal in need please call the GSPCA on 257261 or pop into the Shelter in St Andrews with as many details as possible.

It is extremely important to ensure your cat and kittens are neutered and for further details please contact your local vet.

If you have a cat or kitten problem then you are welcome to contact the GSPCA or there is also Guernsey Animal Aid on 07781 101052 or if in Alderney there is the Alderney Animal Welfare on 01481 822610.

"I went up to Icart today and kept my eyes peeled for any kittens .. on leaving I thought it would be a good idea to have a sign at the start of the footpaths to notify people that there maybe kittens in the area and to keep a look out on their walk! With gspca telephone number :)"
