Below is a statement from the Guernsey States Vet David Chamberlin:
"The events surrounding the incident involving a dog and a pond on L'Ancresse are still unclear. At this stage, no animal is believed to have died, but a dog suffered an adverse skin reaction in early October, which required treatment by a local vet.The animal has responded to treatment and is making a good recovery. Discussions between the States Veterinary Officer, Environmental Health, the Health & Safety Executive, and Plant Health have downgraded a number of potential causes of the reported conditions. Investigations currently indicate that potential sources of chemical contamination were not the cause of the injuries described. Possible causes of the injuries still under consideration include blue-green algal blooms, hairs from the nests and caterpillars of the Brown Tail Moth which are known to have been in this area, ‘Alabama Rot’ and Occupation white phosphorus mortar bombs. Samples have been taken from a water source that has been implicated to investigate whether a naturally occurring algal bloom may have caused the reported problems. However the definitive cause of the incident is not still known nor has it been possible to identify the vet or the owner of the dog involved in the case recently reported in the social media. In this situation it is sensible to apply the precautionary principle and avoid the ponds on L'Ancresse Common until the cause of the incident is identified."
At the GSPCA we would urge all dog owners to avoid the pond in the area as advised by the States Vet.
The location of the pond is located near to the Millennium Stone.
