Earlier today the GSPCA were called out to a cat that had been trapped in a bunker out at Pleinmont.

With a very small gap and no entrance the GSPCA tried calling a number other agencies, departments and groups to see what could be done.

Also at the Shelter a long grasper was constructed and in the second phase of the rescue additional staff were deployed to assist Geoff George the GSPCA Animal Collection Officer.

Nearly 4 hours from the start of the rescue, many calls and many innovative attempts were made in the rescue.   Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager with staff Ian Power and Mike Gallie arrived at the scene just after 3.30pm to help asist Geoff George to see what could be done.

Fortunately Mike Gallie is one of the slimmest of the staff at the GSPCA and with a very tight squeeze he managed to gain access through the gun slip.

Loca the cat who was understandably very nervous and a little distressed was quickly secured and passed to Geoff George and the owners who were waiting with a basket at the gap.

Mike then had to be assisted by staff to exit the bunker safely, where Steve Byrne and Geoff George were on hand and despite a slight tear to Mikes polo shirt both cat and rescuer are both fine after their ordeal.

Mike Gallie GSPCA staff member said "It was certainly a tight squeeze fitting through the gap and thankfully Steve and Geoff were there to help me out of the bunker."

"Loca the cat was very scared but thankfully I managed to get through and that was my first cat rescue."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "With no entrance to the bunker we were really worried what we could do to rescue Loca the cat."

"Thankfully Mike managed to fit through the very thin gap to rescue Loca the cat, but he said there was wildlife that had not been so lucky getting out."

"We have passed on our concerns regarding animals being trapped in bunkers with no access to see if the gaps could be meshed or something done."

"The owners were extremely happy to receive their cat back safely and I think Loca was pleased to be out of the bunker."

"The GSPCA have been non stop recently with rescues and caring for animals and if ever you find a sick or injured animal please call 01481 257261."
