On a daily basis GSPCA Shelter staff work with and learn new skills caring for the many animals that come through the Animal Shelter every day, but this week a very different kind of training has taken place.
The GSPCA receive many stray animals every week and with only 40 to 45% of dogs and cats being microchipped or have any identification this means there are many which are we are unable to quickly reunite with their owners.
As well as dogs and cats the GSPCA receive stray animals from Sorento the Bearded Dragon to tortoise, rabbits to chickens, budgies to ferrets, guinea pigs to hamsters and many more.
Recently the GSPCA launched our new Lost and Found Advice web page which includes all the contacts you may need as well as helpful hints and tips to help with animals you may have lost or found.
Since the first of January every animal that comes to the GSPCA has its details input to a free online secure system which enables easy access for all staff at all times to help with the care and individual records of each animal.
The system called Shelter Manager is used by thousands of charities around the world and has made a fantastic difference in stream lining systems at the GSPCA and thankfully due to a very clever button built into the system we can quickly share information through social media.
The facebook button built in to the Shelter Manager system means that after some training GSPCA staff can quickly upload a stray animals description and where possible a picture online to help reunite them quickly with their owners who are often distressed and worried where there pet may be.
We are hoping that our followers will help share and retweet these messages and pictures to help in the search of animals that are found stray around Guernsey.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'We see thousands of animals come through our doors every year for many reasons and when we have stray animals we want to find their owners as quickly as possible.'
'We still only see around 2 in 5 stray dogs and cats that are microchipped and we are hoping by using social media these lost pets can find their owners quickly.'
'Many owners of the more unusual animals often don't think of calling the Shelter to report them lost and by using our facebook and twitter accounts we can quickly get a message to nearly 4000 followers.'
'It has already helped find many animals their owners and in fact the tortoise that went on yesterday the owner came forward within 5 minutes of it going online.'
'By training the team at the GSPCA to be able to do this means even if it only helps one animal it will make a real difference to both the owner and the animal and it is just another way that we are using social media to help with animal welfare in Guernsey.'
