TEN members of staff from the Medical Specialist Group gave up a sunny Saturday this weekend to undertake voluntary work at the GSPCA.

The Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has a huge variety of duties that need to be completed on a daily basis and so are very grateful when islanders volunteer to give them a hand.

As well as the obvious chores of feeding and exercising animals and cleaning out the kennels and cattery, there are also a number of site-maintenance jobs.

“I don’t normally pick up anything heavier than a biro during the week, so my arms are aching a bit after hedge-trimming for a couple of hours,” said the MSG’s communications & marketing manager, Neil Robilliard.

“A couple of our ladies also did a good job of painting a picket fence, so it’s not just all about working with the animals.”

One of the most popular areas at the GSPCA premises for some of the MSG team was the hedgehog unit, where a couple of new mothers were being helped to cope with their nine tiny babies.

“The babies were so small that they were sitting in the palms of our hands and enjoying licking us non-stop!” said Mr Robilliard.

“It was also good fun taking the dogs to the exercise area for a good run around, as some of them have got great personalities and were obviously pleased to have some new friends for the day.”

As there are clearly health & safety issues and animal welfare issues involved when untrained personnel are working at the GSPCA, the MSG team were taken through a fast-track induction course before they were unleashed to undertake their duties.

“Although some of it was pretty hard work, especially because it was a warm & sunny day, we all really enjoyed the experience and would certainly recommend other local businesses to consider forming a team to help out at the GSPCA,” said Mr Robilliard.

The day at the GSPCA was the latest in a year-long programme of corporate social responsibility events undertaken by MSG staff, including painting a room at the Alzheimer’s Association, staging a tea party for residents of Casquets ward at the Corbinerie and beach-cleaning at Vazon.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "It was a joy to welcome the team from the Medical Specialist Group on Saturday, and they were a fantastic help during what is an extremely busy time of year."

"From helping with the animals to grounds work, we have over 200 animals in our care and during the Summer looking after our site in St Andrews is a huge task and the MSG team were a great help on what was a very hot day."

"All the team and animals from the GSPCA would like to pass on a huge thank you to the staff from the Medical Specialist Group for all their help on Saturday."
