On Friday we saw the close of our Hedgehog Awareness Competition entries close and we have had so many fantastic posters and photos of hedgehog homes.
The team will be short listing the finalists this week but every day the GSPCA have been seeing sick, injured and young hedgehogs.
From strimmer injuries to hoglets (baby hedgehogs) found with no mother the GSPCA have been experiencing a busy Spring with hedgehogs as well as other species.
It is often upsetting when the animals first come in, especially when they are close to death but the GSPCA strive to save that make it into our care.
Here is a happy tale of a mother and daughter that arrived this Spring.
Earlier this month a caring member of public spotted a mother and young hedgehog in the middle of the road during the day in Castel.
Concerned they managed to contain the hedgehogs and then transport them to the GSPCA Animal Shelter in St Andrews.
On first inspection at the Shelter they appeared healthy but to be on the safe side they were taken into the Hedgehog Unit where over a period of a week they were monitored, checked over by the vet and also given the names of Mona (the Mum) and Lisa.
With their health assured and at a good weight Mona and Lisa have today been transported to a new home in Cobo where a lovely lady named Patricia Lince has made provisions for them and where they will be released later this evening.
Both Mona and Lisa have been microchipped so if ever they are returned to the Shelter we will know who they are and where they were released.
Annie Janes Animal Care Assistant who works in the Hedgehog Unit and who dropped off them to Patricia said 'Mona and Lisa, although weren't with us for very long are two of the lucky hedgehogs that will this evening be back where they belong.'
'At the GSPCA we always try to release wildlife back to where they were found and although we haven't released Mona and Lisa back on the road they were found they aren't too far away.'
'Its been a busy few weeks with hedgehogs and especially strimmer injuries and baby hoglets, but if anyone needs advice on hedgehogs they can check out our website, call us on 257261 or if you are interested we will be holding a hedgehog event and talk on Sunday 29th June.'
'If you would like to feed hedgehogs in your garden or you are looking for hedgehog homes we have all you need on sale at the GSPCA reception in St Andrews.'
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'Working with animals you get to see some very sick and injured animals, especially the wildlife but getting thos
e who have been lucky enough to survive their ordeal and get them back to the where they belong makes the heart ache so worth while.'
'If you would like to sponsor a wildlife unit to help the animals in our care and receive our quarterly newsletter then check out our Angel Sponsorship Scheme.''It's been a hard Spring so far at the GSPCA seeing so many hedgehogs injured by strimmers to baby birds attacked by cats and other predators.'
'Thank you to Patricia who will be releasing and keeping a watchful eye on Mona and Lisa later on tonight it is much appreciated.'
