Black cats have had a mixed reaction for centuries with many people believing them a bad omen even in 2016.
Despite each year at the GSPCA and many other charities promoting black cats in need of homes they continue to be the main colour of cat that is often skipped by when new adoptees are looking to adopt a cat.
Today is National Black Cat Day, a day to raise awareness of the many black and white cats waiting for homes in rehoming centres.
At the GSPCA it takes on average much longer for a black cat to find a home and we currently have more than 65% of the cats are either black or black and white at the GSPCA which are either strays, sick, injured or in need of a home.
This Halloween there are black cats in many homes in Guernsey, but the GSPCA have more black cats than any other at the Animal Shelter.
The staff at the GSPCA care for many black cats every year and continue to notice that they often get passed by which is also common for many other rescues around the world.
From one of the oldest 'Mitzi' to one of the youngest adults 'Poppy' many are at the GSPCA through no fault of their own and are in need of a loving new home.
We help hundreds of cats find new homes every year of all ages, sizes and from feral to the most affectionate, but those black and black and white are often at the Shelter much longer than those of other colours.
This coming Monday many black cats will be thought of with Halloween upon us and the GSPCA are asking people to think of the black cats without a home.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "We do not want any one to rush into taking on a pet as it is like taking on a new member of the family, but for those looking for a cat please think of the many black cats we have needing a new home."
"We have dozens of cats currently looking for homes and many more welfare animals under treatment or being hand reared."
"Mitzi is one of the oldest black short haired cats in need of a very special new home."
"We have two lovely cats who are Rosie an long haired black cat and Tom who is black and white both came in and need a home together."
"Some of our black cats are Jack, Maggie, Mitzi, Rambo, Rosie, Ninja and Opal and some black and white cats are Daisy, Dot, Iris, poppy, Simone and Tom."
"We have strays, those owners who could no longer care for, cats in for welfare reasons and those found sick and injured, the black cats we have at the GSPCA really need your help to find their forever home."

Why are black cats considered unlucky?
The association is thought to date back to the 14th century with some people even believing the cats worsened the plague and the Black Death epidemics.
Cats were associated with the devil in the age of witchcraft in the 15th century and many accused witches apparently had black cats as companions. Some people even believed witches turned themselves into black cats.
