In the very early hours of Tuesday morning a member of staff at the Harbour Authority spotted a bird struggling trapped in a pontoon that was close to drowning.
Thankfully he managed to stretch out to rescue the bird and rushed it straight to the GSPCA Animal Shelter.
The Shelter is manned 24 hours and on arrival Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager was there to accept the bird that was very close to death.
An intensive care unit was set up ready and Steve did what he could to try and get some of the fluid out of the bird.
Nelson as he was named by his rescuer would have certainly died if the quick action hadn't been taken, but only hours later this very lucky bird was back on his feet and looking very well although a little weak from his ordeal.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'I really thought Nelson wasn't going to make it through the night.'
'He was so weak and looked close to death and had swallowed a lot of water.'
'The intensive care units that we have here are invaluable and help save lives every day and in fact last night they helped care for five young ducklings we've named Alan, Allan, Alen, Allen and Alan Alan.'
'The newest of these units were paid for by the Christmas Lottery fund and we are very grateful to them and the others that have helped ensure that we can care for animals that really need to be kept in a piece of equipment that can help save lives.'
'If anyone wants to support the work of the Shelter there are many ways from sponsoring an animal unit through our ANGEL scheme or even via our Wish List.'
