As part of this year’s Floral Guernsey charity events, Samarkand, Castel, was opened for the first time in aid of the GSPCA and Young Lives vs Cancer.
310 visitors visited the garden for one day only in June, which was the sunniest and hottest day of the year so far. Visitors also enjoyed tea, coffee, delicious homemade cakes, a Bloomin’ Bellini bar, and there was a fantastic raffle too.
Wendy Woodcock, who lives at Samarkand, said: “People said it was not so much an Open Garden, but they felt they were at an elegant party, held in a real English country garden with plenty of hidden shady seating.”
“I organised the event with my friend Elaine who raises funds for Young Lives vs Cancer, in memory of her Godson Marcus, who sadly passed away at a young age from cancer.”
“I feel very keen to raise funds for this charity and the GSPCA, as we recently lost to cancer, our beloved standard poodle, Melba, and both are worthy charities. It was great that everyone enjoyed themselves so much on the day that many have asked for a repeat performance.”
“A big thank you to everyone who helped made the event possible.”
“Particular thanks must go to my Mum, Win Rowland, who, with her vision and hard work over the decades, has made our family garden so spectacular and enjoyable, giving us year-round interest and colour.”
Steve Byrne, Manager of the GSPCA, said: “A big thank you to Wendy, John, Win and Hilda for opening their garden as part of the Floral Guernsey charity scheme to raise funds for two worthy charities.”
“We are so grateful for the funds they raised to support both the GSPCA and Young Lives for Cancer.”
“We can only do the vital work at the GSPCA with the help of amazing supporters like Wendy and Elaine, so a huge thank you to all who attended and helped at the Open Garden event.”

Steve continued “There are many ways you can help support our vital 24/7 work and donate or raise funds for the hundreds of animals in our care.”
“With over 140 hedgehogs, 4 seal pups, dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, fish, reptiles and many birds we help over 3000 animals through the doors every year.”
“With so many animals in our care we would love you to join our sponsor scheme to help us each month.”
“Just a couple of pounds each month can make a massive difference in helping the animals in our care and to find out more please go to http://www.gspca.org.gg/sites/default/files/Angel%20sponsor%20form%20special%202018%20new.pdf .”
