Every year the GSPCA are called out and receive stray dogs and cats during periods of fireworks that have either escaped or run off due to being scared by the loud bangs they make.
Last year the GSPCA launched our firework calendar which is an online record of firework displays and events which pet owners can easily visit to see the upcoming occasions which could scare their pets.
To notify us of your event please email the team at the GSPCA and we can add your firework display to our calendar. Please let us know the location, date and times it is planned for and also if it is public or a private event.
Once we have these details we advertise them on our calendar and also post them on the day on our social media.

To help your dogs and cats during these very stressful times we have a SALE on Adaptil and Feliway products which are designed to appease your pets during times of difficulty. We have their new product range in also at a new price.
Feliway and Adaptil are pheromones used in many kennels and are very popular products with many to help settle animals in a number of circumstances.

Our reception and shop area is open Monday to Saturday between 9am and 5pm (Closed Bank Holidays and Sundays)
Also we see less than 45% of the stray dogs and cats microchipped that are found and brought to the GSPCA, and even less have collars with tags.
For only £4.99 you can get your dog or cat microchipped. We can do this Monday to Saturday between 9am and 5pm, although we do appreciate a call to let us know you would like to have your pet chipped as it can help speed the process which only takes a few minutes.

Thankfully the incidents of animals being injured by fireworks & bonfires in Guernsey are few and far between; but we mustn’t get too complacent. Below are some basic guidelines that will enable you to help all of our furry and feathered friends to stay calm and safe on and around Bonfire night.
GSPCA Firework Advice
Fireworks are exciting and pretty to look at and it is fun to celebrate Guy Fawkes with a bang, but for our furry and feathered friends this time of year can be a nightmare. Many animals domestic and wild suffer needlessly every year.
The GSPCA would like to urge everyone follow our animal friendly firework code and protect your pets and the local wildlife.
Please make sure that your pets are wearing a collar with an identity tag in case they manage to escape from your home. We would also strongly advise that you have your pets microchipped as this enables us to reunite them with you much more easily should they run away. Please call the GSPCA for further details on having your animal microchipped.
Walk your dog during the day.
As soon as it gets dark keep your dog or cat inside. Ensure all of the windows and doors are locked including dog and cat flaps.
Go to an organised display if you can. If you are having a private firework display then build you bonfire as late as possible to reduce the likelihood of any wildlife taking up residence. Before lighting the fire check the area thoroughly for hedgehogs. We are always saddened by the number of hedgehogs we receive that have suffered severe burns.
Please notify your neighbours of your intentions. Especially the elderly and those who have pets.
When horses are startled they are likely to bolt and can suffer serious injuries. Ensure that all horses, ponies and donkeys are securely stabled with the doors closed.
Remember to bring guinea pigs and rabbits inside or place under cover in an out building.
Don’t take your dog to a firework display. If you are going out then draw your curtains, put the television or radio on and provide you pet with a safe hiding place so they feel secure.
If you know that your pet is frightened by loud noises such as fireworks or has an existing heart condition please contact your vet for advice. They may suggest you try an Appeasing Pheromone such as ADAPTIL or Feliway diffusers or may discuss the use of sedatives; depending on your pet’s needs.
Please clean up after firework parties. Litter is hazardous to domestic and wild animals.
Remember NEVER let fireworks off near animals.

Here is some previous information regarding the puppies -
7 of the puppies under section 70 of the Animal Welfare Ordnance no longer belong to the man from the Slovak Republic.
The other 18 are being detained at the GSPCA due to the fraudulent passports and their age being younger than stated. This means they will have to have a period of isolation until they are vaccinated against rabies and hold valid pet passports which could take between 5 and 7 weeks.
Some are currently receiving treatments for ailments which they had when they arrived.
On Sunday 6th September the States Vet and GSPCA Manager gave an update to the press on the current care of the animals and explained the procedures which are currently being followed.

Here is a summary of the key actions from the Dogs Trust on-the-ground investigation work -
• Successfully smuggled a fake dog without a visual check at British borders in three out of four attempts
• Filmed three breeders in Lithuania, all of whom sold us puppies under the age of 12 weeks and arranged for passports to be issued via their own vet contacts
• Obtained eight passports from seven vets in Lithuania who falsified data on the passports in order to enable puppies under the age of 15 weeks to travel to Great Britain
• Filmed a vet in Lithuania who suggested giving a sedative to a puppy before travelling, implying that this is a way to smuggle a puppy through border controls unnoticed • Filmed seven vets in Romania,two of whom stated that they could falsify passport information for us (including one for a nine week old puppy)
• Filmed five breeders in Romania who had sold puppies to the UK in the past, all of whom said they could arrange fake passports for underage dogs
• Contacted one further breeder in Romania by phone who said he could arrange passports for eight week old puppies
• Visited nine sellers/breeders from Lithuania, Hungary and the Czech Republic selling puppies (via advertisement on UK classified websites) that had recently come over from Eastern Europe under PETS to be sold in the UK

24 hours a day, 7 days a week staff and volunteers work around the clock at the GSPCA to ensure the animals are cared for and those in need can be rescued around Guernsey.
At present with the 25 Slovakian puppies and many other animals at the GSPCA we are continually appealing for animal feed and cleaning products.
One of the wonderful additions that has benefited many animals at the Shelter has been our Wish List which we have both on our website and a link to an Amazon Wish List.
Since launching our Amazon Wish List in October 2012 nearly every week we have had wonderful donations from honey for the hedgehogs to heat lamps to keep those ill nice and warm.
We are currently appealing for local business that wish to support the GSPCA to consider displaying a GSPCA Wish List Star on items that would benefit the animals in our care and to have a collection bin for those items.
